Emory & Henry Baseball Splits A Saturday Doubleheader With King

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (1-3) picked up its first win of the year on Saturday afternoon as it split its doubleheader with King (Tenn.) University (3-1). The Tornado claimed the first game by an 8-3 score but the Wasps spoiled the series sweep with a 13-2 win in the nightcap.

Game One – King (Tenn.) 8, Emory & Henry 3 (seven innings)
E&H got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when sophomore third baseman Jared Foley (Sparta, N.C.) stole third and was able to advance home thanks to a throwing error by the catcher.

King put three runs across in the third including a pair of RBI singles by Robbie Scott and Connor Andrews to go up 3-1. A two-run double by Wasp sophomore second baseman Triston Hensley (Covington, Va.) in the top of the fourth frame tied things up at three runs apiece.

The Tornado went ahead for good in the fourth as Jarrett Backus hit a RBI double. King added three insurance runs in the sixth for the final 8-3 margin.

King's Jakob Brown picked up the complete-game victory, scattering two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts. E&H sophomore Will Clark (Collinsville, Va.) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work.

Game Two – Emory & Henry 13, King (Tenn.) 2 (seven innings)
E&H scored once in the first and four times in the second to build a 5-0 advantage. The Wasps put another six runs across in the fourth to go up 11-0 with senior right fielder Hayden Milley (Clover, S.C.) and freshman centerfielder Sean Davis-Cherry (Chesapeake, Va.) both driving in two with base hits.

King got on the board in the bottom half of the fourth as Andrews hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to make it 11-1. Both squads got single runs in the sixth frame and the Wasps added a final run in the top of the seventh on another base knock by Milley to complete the 13-2 rout.

E&H freshman Justin Day (Strasburg, Va.) picked up the win as scattered one run on one hit and two strikeouts over four innings pitched. King's Michael Cordova was settled with the loss, permitting five runs on five hits and three walks in just 1.1 innings of work.

Emory & Henry will host the University of Virginia's College at Wise next Saturday in a doubleheader. First pitch for game one will be at noon.
