Emory & Henry Baseball Splits Its Sunday Doubleheader With UVA Wise

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (2-5) got a split against the University of Virginia's College at Wise (3-6) Sunday afternoon. The Wasps opened the day with a 13-3 win while the Cavaliers took the series with a 9-6 win in game two.

Game One – Emory & Henry 13, UVA Wise 3 (seven innings)
E&H jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first highlighted by a two-run double to right field by sophomore first baseman McCray Sawyers (Stuart, Va.). A Jojo Kelliher home run in the second for Wise closed the gap to 2-1.

The Wasps scored six in the third to break the game open with sophomore second baseman Triston Hensley (Covington, Va.) driving in two with a single to left field. Junior designated hitter Eli Milhorn (Bluff City, Tenn.) and fifth-year centerfielder Hayden Milley (Clover, S.C.) each had RBI base knocks as well.

In the fourth, the Cavaliers got two runs back to make it an 8-3 game but Emory & Henry scored five times in the sixth for the 13-3 final score. Hensley posted another RBI base hit while Milhorn drove in a pair with a poke to left-center.

Sophomore Will Clark (Collinsville, Va.) earned the win, scattering three runs on four hits with five strikeouts over six innings. UVA Wise's Brock Duff suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on eight hits and four walks in three innings.

Game Two – UVA Wise 9, Emory & Henry 6 (seven innings)
The Cavaliers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a three-run home run by Justin Reed. E&H closed the gap to 4-3 after two as freshman left fielder Sean Davis-Cherry (Chesapeake, Va.) tagged a three-run shot of his own over the fence.

In the sixth, UVA Wise pushed the margin to 7-3 as Reed hit another two-run homer while Hunter Meador had a RBI single. The Cavaliers extended their lead to 9-3 midway through the seventh on a two-run single by Shyhiem Pannell.

Down to their final three outs, the Wasps fought back and close the gap to 9-6 on a three-run blast by Milley. Emory & Henry got the tying run to the plate but was unable to get any closer.

Conner McKeehan earned the win, allowing three runs on six hits and four strikeouts over five innings. Wasp freshman Justin Day (Strasburg, Va.) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on six hits and four strikeouts as he went five innings.

Emory & Henry will visit Covenant College next weekend for a three-game series. Friday's single game begins at 2:00 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader is set for noon.
