Emory & Henry Baseball Splits A Pair Of Games At Bluefield State On Wednesday Afternoon

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (4-11) picked up an 8-6 win in game one over Bluefield State College (10-16) Wednesday afternoon. The Big Blues came away with the split, defeating the Wasps by a 13-6 margin in the nightcap.

Game One – Emory & Henry 8, Bluefield State 6 (seven innings)
Emory & Henry opened the game a run in the top of the first as sophomore first baseman McCray Sawyers (Stuart, Va.). The Big Blues tied the contest in the bottom of the frame on a solo home run by Cole Cote.

In the fifth, the Wasps went ahead 4-1 thanks to a RBI double by junior designated hitter Eli Milhorn (Bluff City, Tenn.) and a two-run single by freshman right fielder Ben Williams (Montpelier, Va.). Bluefield State answered with five in its half of the fifth including a two-run home run by C.J. Cooper for a 6-4 advantage.

E&H tied things up at six runs apiece in the sixth. Milhorn drove in a run with a single to right-center, highlighting the frame. In the seventh, the Wasps scored twice for the final 8-6 score. Junior left fielder Jackson Lancaster (Keeling, Va.) and sophomore second baseman Triston Hensley (Covington, Va.) each had RBI singles in the inning to propel the Wasps to the win.

Zack McRae earned the win in relief, allowing four earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Austin Stambaugh suffered the loss on two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings.

Game Two – Bluefield State 13, Emory & Henry 6 (seven innings)
The Wasps put up three runs in the top of the first with Sawyers hitting a triple to right-center. In the bottom of the inning, Jarred Simpson closed the gap to 3-2 for BC with a two-run single.

Bluefield State went ahead 8-3 after three as Jordan Varela-Payne hit a home run on back-to-back at bats for a total of five runs. Emory & Henry responded with two runs in the fourth, getting the score to 8-5 as freshman centerfielder Sean Davis-Cherry (Chesapeake, Va.) hit a solo home run.

Five more runs for the Big Blues in the fourth and fifth innings extended the lead to 13-5 with Simpson hitting a two-run blast in the fourth. The Wasps capped the scoring, 13-6, in the top of the sixth as Hensley scored on a wild pitch.

BSC's Jordan Livingston picked up the win, permitting six runs on 10 hits with eight strikeouts. Wasp freshman Luke Kennedy (Irmo, S.C.) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks in two innings.

Emory & Henry will remain on the road next Tuesday when it visits University of Pikeville. First pitch will be at 2:00 p.m.
