Guilford Baseball Rallies To Defeat Emory & Henry, 13-9, Friday Afternoon

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College Baseball Team (4-11) scored the final six runs of the ballgame for a 13-9 come-from-behind win against Emory & Henry College (4-13) Friday afternoon. The contest was originally scheduled to be played on Wednesday, but was postponed to Friday due to the weather forecast in the Piedmont Triad of North Carolina.

How It Happened
The Quakers opened up a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on RBI double by Isaiah Hairston.

Emory & Henry responded in the top of the second, unloading seven runs. Freshman right fielder Will Jennings (Abingdon, Va.) got things started with a two-run double while sophomore first baseman McCray Sawyers (Stuart, Va.) plated a pair with a base hit to center. Sophomore second baseman Triston Hensley (Covington, Va.) drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk and scored later in the frame on a wild pitch.

GC pushed five runs across in the bottom of the second, highlighted by a two-run double by Michael Sumner. The Quakers tied the contest at seven runs apiece in the third on a base hit to center by Bryce Vestal. The Wasps regained the lead, 9-7, in the fifth on a two-run home run by junior left fielder Jackson Lancaster (Keeling, Va.).

In the sixth, Guilford again tied things up, 9-9, and went ahead 11-9 after a two-run seventh. The Quakers got a pair of insurance runs in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk by Sumner as another run scored on a wild pitch for the final 13-9 margin.

Jacob Ray earned the win in relief for GC, scattering four hits and four strikeouts over four innings of shutout baseball. E&H freshman Justin Day (Strasburg, Va.) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks in 3.1 innings pitched.
