Pikeville Baseball Downs Emory & Henry, 7-2, Wednesday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The University of Pikeville Baseball Team (14-19) opened up a 7-1 lead over Emory & Henry College (5-14) and cruised to a 7-2 win on Tuesday afternoon. With the victory, the Bears sweep the season series with the Wasps.

How It Happened
The Bears got on the board in the top of the first on a base hit to left field by Noah Helton and extended their lead to 2-0 as Jared Kirkman drove in a run with a base hit to left of his own in the second.

E&H closed the gap to 2-1 in the bottom half of the second on a double to left-center by sophomore shortstop Kolby Anderson (King William, Va.).

In the fourth, Pikeville pushed the lead to 4-1 with a two-run home run by Kirkman. Another pair of runs in the fifth including a double to left field by DeMarco Miller extended the lead to 6-1. UPIKE added an insurance run in the seventh as Tyler Maynard scored on a wild pitch.

The Wasps continued to battle late, getting a second run across in the eighth on a base knock by freshman left fielder Sean Davis-Cherry (Chesapeake, Va.) but would get no closer than 7-2.

Ryan Ratliff earned the complete-game win for the Bears, scattering two runs on seven hits and four walks with two strikeouts. E&H junior Jack Singleton (Charlotte, N.C.) took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out three.

Up Next
Emory & Henry will visit Milligan University this weekend for a three-game series. The Wasps will play the Buffaloes once on Friday (4:00 p.m.) and twice on Saturday (noon).
