Emory & Henry Baseball Splits A Doubleheader At Montreat Wednesday Afternoon

MONTREAT, N.C. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (8-22) faced off against Montreat College (26-21) twice on Wednesday afternoon. The Wasps claimed the first game by an 8-4 score while the Cavaliers won the second by an 11-1 margin.

Game One – Emory & Henry 8, Montreat 4 (seven innings)
The Wasps got out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Junior right fielder Jackson Lancaster (Keeling, Va.) put E&H on the board when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Junior left fielder Tyler Phillips (Ooltewah, Tenn.) then drove in a pair with a single through the right side and freshman catcher Josh Howard (Salem, Va.) doubled down the left field line for the fourth run.

Tarik Latchmansingh made it a 4-1 contest with a solo home run for Montreat in the bottom of the second. In the top of the third, E&H pushed its advantage to 7-1 highlighted by a RBI base hit by Howard.

The Cavaliers closed the gap to 7-4 as Daniel Wetmore plated a pair with a double to right-center and a base hit to right field by O.J. Borroto. Emory & Henry capped the scoring, 8-4, in the seventh on a double by Phillips.

E&H sophomore Will Clark (Collinsville, Va.) earned the win, scattering four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts over 5.2 innings. Freshman Justin Day (Strasburg, Va.) got the save, striking out one in 1.1 innings of work. Harold Aguilera suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts across 2.2 innings.

Game Two – Montreat 11, Emory & Henry 1 (seven innings)
E&H opened the game with a run in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by freshman third baseman Zack McRae (Greensboro, N.C.). Montreat went ahead, 4-1, highlighted by a three-run double by Michael Bell.

Two runs by the Cavaliers in both the second and third extended the lead to 8-1. Montreat scored three more in the fourth, making the score 11-1. In the bottom of the sixth, MC got the final three markers (14-1) on a home run to right-center by Ashton Hawkins.

Brandon Russell earned the win, allowing just one run on six hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work. E&H junior Jack Singleton (Charlotte, N.C.) suffered the loss with three earned runs on seven hits in one-plus innings.
