How It Happened
The Wasps got out to a 5-0 lead in the first. Sophomore third baseman McCray Sawyers (Stuart, Va.) drilled a three-run home run to left-center to get things started while junior left fielder Jackson Lancaster (Keeling, Va.) and freshman right fielder Ben Williams (Montpelier, Va.) each had RBI singles in the frame.
In the second, E&H went ahead 6-0 as sophomore second baseman Triston Hensley (Covington, Va.) drove in sophomore third baseman Jared Foley (Sparta, N.C.) with a sacrifice fly.
Ferrum responded with six runs in the third, highlighted by a grand slam by Clayton Michael, tying the contest. Emory & Henry regained the lead, 7-6, in the bottom of the third thanks to a base knock by freshman centerfielder Will Jennings (Abingdon, Va.). Two runs in both the fourth and fifth by the Panthers made it a 10-7 contest.
The Wasps closed the gap to 10-9 in the fifth as Williams and Jennings hit back-to-back RBI singles. E&H tied the game at 10 runs apiece when junior catcher Nathan Treadway (Valdese, N.C.) scored on a wild pitch.
The two squads traded scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth, forcing an extra frame. In the 10th, Michael put the Panthers ahead, 11-10, singling to centerfield. E&H put a runner on with two outs but was unable to generate enough offense to push a run across.
Matthew Sheppard earned the win in relief for FC, pitching the final two innings as allowed one hit and two walks with two strikeouts. E&H freshman Justin Day (Strasburg, Va.) suffered the loss, allowing just one run on three hits in the final three innings of the contest.
