Washington and Lee Baseball Sweeps Emory & Henry Saturday In Season Finale

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee University Baseball Team (20-14) earned a pair of wins over visiting Emory & Henry College (9-28) to close out the regular season on Saturday. The Generals notched a 7-3 win to open the day and completed the sweep with a win by the same 7-3 margin.

Game One – Washington and Lee 7, Emory & Henry 3 (seven innings)
Washington and Lee got out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Jacob Jackson hit a two-run home run to left field to get things started while Jaden Keuhner had a RBI single up the middle later in the inning.

In the second, the Wasps closed the gap to 3-2 on a single down the right field line by freshman centerfielder Will Jennings (Abingdon, Va.) and a fielder's choice by freshman catcher Josh Howard (Salem, Va.).

The Generals responded with three runs in the bottom of the second, highlighted by a two-run home run by Mitchell Salvino. E&H made it 6-3 in the third with sophomore third baseman Jared Foley (Sparta, N.C.) scored from first base after a throwing error by the pitcher on a failed pick-off attempt.

W&L capped the scoring in the third, 7-3, as Luke Czepiel reached home on a wild pitch.

John Benner earned the win for the Generals, scattering two earned runs on four hits with nine strikeouts over four innings. E&H sophomore Will Clark (Collinsville, Va.) took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits in two innings of work.

Game Two – Washington and Lee 7, Emory & Henry 3 (seven innings)
The Generals opened up a 2-0 lead in the first as Salvino hit a solo home run. E&H made it a 2-1 contest in the second inning with Jennings driving in freshman right fielder Ben Williams (Montpelier, Va.) with a base knock to right.

Washington and Lee scored five in a row between the second and the fifth with three runs coming on successive at bats in the second frame. Salvino added another RBI, singling to left field. Zach Senders gave the Generals their final two runs with a solo homer in the third and a double to center in the fifth.

Emory & Henry added single runs in the sixth and seventh for the final 7-3 score. Williams drove in one with a fielder's choice in the sixth while sophomore shortstop Kolby Anderson (King William, Va.) plated a run on a groundout to shortstop.

W&L's Thomas Haller picked up the victory, allowing two unearned runs on four hits with six strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Wasp junior Jack Singleton (Charlotte, N.C.) suffered the loss, permitting five runs on five hits in two innings.
