Carson-Newman Baseball Sweeps Emory & Henry, 15-4 & 5-0, Saturday Afternoon

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman University Baseball Team (4-6) took both ends of a doubleheader over Emory & Henry College (4-6) on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles took game one by a 15-4 margin and shut out the Wasps in game two for the 5-0 win.

Game One – Carson-Newman 15, Emory & Henry 4
Carson-Newman jumped out to an early lead, as they posted three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Wasps responded with a run of their own in the top of the second. Junior designated hitter Lane Gay (Keedysville, Md.) led off with a single and advanced on a walk from fifth-year infielder Mason Lyda (Mills River, N.C.) and a single from senior infielder Noah Mazza (Plainfield, Ill.). Junior infielder Jared Foley (Sparta, N.C.) got E&H on the board with an RBI single to score Gay from third. 

The Wasps added two more in the top of the third. Junior first baseman Cole Cunningham (Wake Forest, N.C.) reached on a fielder's choice, senior catcher Camden Bailey (Sterling, Ill.) singled and junior outfielder Matt Hill (Pineville, N.C.) drew a walk to load the bases. Lyda walked to force home a run and Mazza singled to tie things up at 3-3.

Both teams were held scoreless through the fourth and fifth innings before E&H jumped ahead in the top of the sixth. Lyda drew another walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Mazza and came around to score on an RBI single from senior outfielder Tyler Bradley (Bessemer City, N.C.) to take the 4-3 lead. The Eagles responded with a monster bottom of the sixth, posting seven runs on five hits and one error to retake the lead 10-4. C-N would add five more in the bottom of eighth to cruise to the comfortable 15-4 win.

Senior right-hander Zach Clover (Cary, N.C.) took the loss on the mound while Carson-Newman's Noah Pridmore earned the win. Mazza and junior outfielder Wayne Mize (Salisbury, N.C.) led the Wasps' offense with two hits each.

Game Two – Carson-Newman 5, Emory & Henry 0
The Eagles were once again the first team to strike, as they posted two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take another early lead. Carson-Newman would add on in the fourth with one run and increased their lead with two more in the bottom of the fifth. E&H just could not get anything going offensively, as the Eagles pitching staff kept them off the board throughout the second game of the doubleheader for the 5-0 victory.

Grif Hughes went 2.2 scoreless innings on the bump to earn the win for the Eagles while freshman righty Camden Boyer (Lutz, Fla.) was saddled with the loss after giving up five runs, three earned, in 4.2 innings pitched. Senior infielder Jermie Greene, Jr. (Troutman, N.C.) was the lone Wasp with multiple hits in game two, as he contributed a pair of base knocks.
