Five-Run Seventh Inning Propels Emory & Henry Baseball To 10-4 Win Over Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (5-21, 2-13 SAC) took down Tusculum University (15-12, 10-5 SAC) in midweek action Tuesday afternoon. E&H recorded 11 hits on its way to a 10-4 win. Although both teams are members of the South Atlantic Conference, Tuesday's game was played as a non-conference contest as the Wasps and Pioneers are not scheduled to meet this season.

How It Happened
The Wasps took the lead in the top of the first inning when fifth-year first baseman Jermie Greene, Jr. (Troutman, N.C.) drew a walk and came around to score on an RBI double from junior designated hitter Jacob Bebber (Taylorsville, N.C.) to make it 1-0. Tusculum answered back in the bottom of the third with a run on a pair of hits to even the score at 1-1.

E&H tallied three runs in the top of the fourth. Senior outfielder Matt Hill (Pineville, N.C.) and fifth-year outfielder Christian Schmidt (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) were issued back-to-back free passes and both moved up on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore catcher Garrison Bullock (Concord, N.C.). Senior outfielder Triston Hensley (Covington, Va.) reached on an error to score Hill and freshman shortstop Anthony Umbach (Harrisburg, N.C.) plated another on a safety squeeze. Senior third baseman Jared Foley (Sparta, N.C.) delivered an RBI double and the Wasps held a 4-1 advantage.

The Pioneers chipped away at the deficit with a run in the home half of the sixth, but Emory & Henry would add to its lead in the top of the seventh. Umbach and Foley led off with a pair of singles and fifth-year second baseman Noah Mazza (Plainfield, Ill.) drew a walk to load the bases. Bebber singled to right to score one and Hill followed with a two-RBI double to run the Wasps' margin out to 7-2. Schmidt executed another safety squeeze to score Bebber and Bullock drilled an RBI single to center to balloon the score out to 9-2.

The Wasps struck again in the top of the eighth inning after Umbach drew a walk and Foley singled, Greene, Jr. recorded an RBI single through the middle of the diamond to plate Umbach and run the score to 10-2. TU got two runs back in the bottom of the ninth, but the Wasps held on for the 10-4 victory. 

Redshirt freshman pitcher Drew Lanzo (Indian Trail, N.C.) earned the win on the hill for E&H after scattering a pair of runs on five hits while striking out three batters over 5 ⅓ innings of work. Trejen Fox-Birdwell took the loss for the Pioneers, giving up three runs over just 1/3 innings on the mound. Foley led the Wasps with three hits and an RBI while Bebber and Hill each drove in a pair of runs. Five other E&H hitters recorded an RBI in the win.

E&H hits the road again this weekend when they travel to Hickory, North Carolina to take on the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne University for a three-game South Atlantic Conference series. First pitch of game one is scheduled for Friday, March 22 at 5:00 p.m. from Durham Field.
