How It Happened
Carson-Newman took an early lead in the top of the first inning as they tallied two runs on three hits and an E&H error. The Wasps answered back in the bottom of the first as fifth-year second baseman Jared Foley (Sparta, N.C.) singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman shortstop Jaret Hoppes (Taylorsville, N.C.) and stole third base. Senior third baseman Steven Smith (Salisbury, N.C.) plated Foley with an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 2-1.
C-N continued to increase its margin as the Eagles added one run in the third, one in the sixth and three more in the eighth to push their advantage out to 7-1. The Wasps managed to put two runners on the bottom of the ninth, but could not push anyone across as the visitors took the win by the 7-1 final score.
Christian Henderson earned the win on the mound as he went the distance, allowing just one run on eight hits while striking out four batters. Junior pitcher Garrett Williams (Charlottesville, Va.) took the loss for the Wasps as he surrendered three runs, two earned, on four hits with a strikeout in two plus innings of work. Foley led the offense with three hits and a run scored. Fifth-year catcher Camden Bailey (Sterling, Ill.) recorded a pair of knocks while Smith, fifth-year designated hitter Caeden Howell (Roaring River, N.C.) and senior first baseman Jacob Bebber (Taylorsville, N.C.) finished with one hit each.
