Emory & Henry Cross Country Opens 2011 Season At Hornet Challenge

BEDFORD, Va. – The Emory & Henry Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams opened the 2011 season Thursday at the Hornet Challenge, hosted by Lynchburg College. The race, contested at the Claytor Nature Study Center, served as a preview for the 2011 ODAC Championships, which will be run on the same course on Saturday, October 29.

The E&H men were led by senior Keran Billaud (Dublin, Va.) as he covered the 8K course in a time of 28:26 to finish fifth overall. Sophomore Cole Conley (Floyd, Va.) finished 34th, running a 31:18 on the day. As a team, Emory & Henry finished sixth out of the seven teams in attendance at the meet.

Medalist honors went to Dan Nafziger of Eastern Mennonite University with a time of 27:19 while Bridgewater College took home the team title.

On the women’s side, sophomore Katelyn Phibbs (Saltville, Va.) led the Wasps over the 6K course, finishing 39th overall.

Bridgewater’s Olivia Mills won the race with a time of 23:20 but Washington and Lee University placed three runners in the top seven to secure the team trophy.

Emory & Henry will next race on Saturday, September 24 when it travels to Salem, Va., for Roanoke College’s Maroon Invitational.
