Emory & Henry Football Holds Annual “Day Of Service” For Southwest Virginia Community

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry Football Team has a standing tradition of service projects each year during Fall Break. This year, the Wasps took a morning off from their preparation for Saturday's game to give back to the community which has supported them so strongly. The team broke off into seven different groups and went to different sites around Southwest Virginia, spending the morning serving the community.

The projects for this year's Day of Service including working at food pantries, assisting at a Habitat for Humanity house, providing general maintenance and upkeep at an equestrian center and Head Start center, assisting with a United Way project and landscaping work at a senior center.

At the Lowe & Fisher Food Pantry in Chilhowie and Feeding America Southwest Virginia in Abingdon, the players helped by stocking shelves, cleaning and other general assistance. The group working with Habitat for Humanity in Glade Spring assisted with putting up interior walls in the home.

Wonder Kids Therapeutic Equestrian Center was another site for service on the day as student-athletes helped with cleaning the barn and stalls and providing general service around the facility. The players also provided landscaping service at the Abingdon Senior Center and helped with cleaning and organizing toys and other instructional materials at the Head Start program in Hayters Gap. A United Way project where the group moved an elderly lady's furniture to a new house was also undertaken. She will be able to settle into her new home when she returns from a physical rehabilitation program.
