Bridgewater Football Downs Emory & Henry, 27-14, Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The Bridgewater College Football Team (5-3, 2-2 ODAC) rolled up 424 yards of total offense on Saturday afternoon en route to defeating Emory & Henry College (4-5, 1-4 ODAC) in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action at Fred Selfe Stadium. It was also Senior Day for E&H, as 15 young men playing their final home game were honored prior to the contest.

The Eagles got on the board first with 9:34 remaining in the first half. Anthony Carter scored the first of his three touchdowns on the day from six yards out, capping a seven-play 40-yard drive.

Emory & Henry took a 7-6 lead just seven seconds into the second quarter. After recovering their own punt after it hit off of a Bridgewater player's foot, sophomore quarterback Kyle Boden (Knoxville, Tenn.) found senior wide receiver Adrian Jordan (Covington, Va.) on back-to-back plays including a 17-yarder for the score. Junior placekicker Matt Turchin (Salisbury, N.C.) added the extra point.

After forcing two straight punts by the Eagles, including a quick kick on third down from their end zone, the Wasps extended their lead to 14-6. Freshman running back Joseph Vaughn (Gate City, Va.) had a 24-yard scamper that set up his two-yard plunge for the touchdown.

Bridgewater got a field goal with 19 seconds remaining before halftime after a 16-play 70-yard drive that chewed up 6:06. Will Davis made the three-point attempt from 20 yards out to cut the Wasps' lead to 14-9 going into the half.

After the break, the Eagles got back-to-back touchdowns from Carter as they held the ball for over nine of the first 10 minutes of the third quarter. Carter finished the drives with one- and three-yard touchdown runs, giving Bridgewater a 21-14 lead after both extra point attempts failed.

Bridgewater got an insurance touchdown to go up by two scores in the middle of the fourth quarter. The Eagles went 50 yards in 12 plays after a fake punt attempt by the Wasps was halted at midfield. Carlos Gonzalez found Cliff Woodard with a 15-yard pass for the touchdown, to make the score 27-14 after a fourth failed extra point attempt by Bridgewater.

Emory & Henry had a chance to cut the lead late, getting all the way down to the Bridgewater two yardline, but the Eagles' defense got an interception in the end zone to guarantee the victory.

Bridgewater finished the game with 424 yards of total offense (235 rushing, 189 passing) and held a 25-13 advantage in first downs. Carter finished the contest with 135 yards on 36 carries with three touchdowns. Gonzalez was 15-for-25 on the night with 172 passing yards and a score, finding six different receivers on the day.

The Emory & Henry offense was paced by Boden with 209 yards through the air on 18-for-38 passing with one touchdown. Boden hit eight different receivers, who were led by Jordan with four catches for 74 yards and a score. Junior running back Adam Pugh (Norwalk, Ohio) had 36 yards rushing while Vaughn ran for 32 yards and a touchdown. The Wasps finished with 104 rushing yards and 209 passing yards for 296 yards of total offense.

Defensively, Bridgewater was led by Chris Wholey with seven tackles and a pass defended while Victor Williams and Todd Harris each had six stops. Steven Jackson had an interception for the Eagles in addition to three tackles.

Senior linebacker Travis Bolt (Willis, Va.) headed the charge with 14 tackles including three for loss while junior linebacker Devan Sproles (Norton, Va.) had 14 stops of his own. Senior cornerback Michael Young (Lawrenceville, Ga.) made 14 tackles as well for E&H.

Emory & Henry will next take the field on Saturday, November 12 when it travels to face Guilford College after a bye week. The Wasps and Quakers will kickoff at 1:00 p.m.
