Emory & Henry Tabs 12 On 2011 All-ODAC Football Teams

FOREST, Va. – Emory & Henry College has seen 12 of its players selected to the 2011 All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference Football Teams, ODAC officials announced Wednesday. The all-conference teams are voted on by the league's seven head coaches. The Wasps placed four players on each of the first, second and third all-conference teams.

Leading the way for E&H is junior linebacker Devan Sproles (Norton, Va.) who was selected as the Lou Wacker Defensive Player of the Year for the league. The honor is named for Emory & Henry's legendary former head coach, who won a record 11 ODAC Championships.

Sproles, led the conference in total tackles with 107 and his 67 assists also topped the league. He finished second in the conference with six interceptions, thanks in part to a three-interception effort in the final game of the season against Guilford College.  It was the first time since the 2007 season that a player has intercepted three passes in a game. Sproles had 10 or more tackles in six games this season, including a season-high 15 stops against UVA-Wise. He won two ODAC Player of the Week awards in addition to being named a BSN Player of the Week on two occasions.

Joining Sproles on the All-ODAC First Team are senior offensive lineman Ben Johnson (Connelly Springs, N.C.), senior defensive end Daniel Preston (Kingsport, Tenn.) and senior punter T.J. Frazier (Roanoke, Va.).

Johnson was a stalwart from his right tackle position on the offensive line that allowed just seven sacks on 427 pass attempts for the season. Preston finished second on the team with 74 tackles and led the Wasps with 7.0 tackles for loss. Frazier, a four-time All-ODAC selection, led the league in punting average (39.1 yds/punt) and placed 19 of his punts (35.8%) inside the 20 yard line.

On the second team for Emory & Henry, were senior linebacker Ed Smith (Church Hill, Tenn.), senior cornerback Michael Young (Lawrenceville, Ga.), senior wide receiver Adrian Jordan (Covington, Va.) and junior placekicker Matt Turchin (Salisbury, N.C.).

Smith and Young had 63 and 58 tackles on the year, respectively, while Young added three interceptions and a league-leading 11 pass break-ups. Jordan caught 49 passes on the year for 738 yards and six scores to finish third in yardage and fourth in touchdown catches. Turchin made a school-record 11 field goals on the season and led the league in field goal percentage at 78.6% (11-for-14). He went 32-for-32 on the year for PAT's and has connected on 45-straight PATs.

Senior wide receiver Preston Jennings (Banner Elk, N.C.), senior center Michael Farris (Boone, N.C.), senior defensive tackle Keith Taylor (Princeton, W.Va.) and sophomore Jason Hill (Hickory, N.C.) all took All-ODAC Third-Team honors.

Jennings led the Wasps with a school-record 71 receptions on the year including a school and ODAC-record 21 catches against Hampden-Sydney. Jennings totaled 539 yards and four touchdowns for the season. As E&H's center, Farris was the starting point for an offense that totaled 3,739 yards and 35 touchdowns on the season. Taylor anchored the defensive line and had 47 tackles on the year with 5.5 tackles for loss for 16 yards. Hill had a breakout year in the secondary for Emory & Henry at his strong safety position with 64 tackles and two interceptions, despite missing one game with an injury.
