Emory & Henry Football Blows By Ferrum, 49-13, Saturday In Season Opener

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Football Team (1-0) scored the first 42 points of the game as it defeated Ferrum College (0-1) by a 49-13 score on Saturday afternoon at Fred Selfe Stadium. The 49 points tied for the second-most ever scored by the Wasps against the Panthers and the most since 2007.

E&H got on the board at the 10:52 mark of the first quarter. Junior kicker Austin Breed (Atlanta, Ga.) converted a 29-yard field goal which capped a 10-play, 53-yard drive. The Wasps made it 10-0 just 62 seconds later when senior wide receiver Chad Williams (Elkton, Va.) caught a 14-yard pass from senior quarterback Kyle Boden (Knoxville, Tenn.).

Emory & Henry pushed its advantage to 17-0 when Boden found junior wide receiver Josh Smith (Radford, Va.) on a 41-yard pass down the right hash. The drive went 85 yards on 11 plays covering 5:03.

The Wasps poured it on in the second quarter, scoring 25 points. With 12:00 on the clock, redshirt freshman fullback Jonathan Turpin (Wytheville, Va.) barreled in from one yard out for his first touchdown wearing blue and gold. Senior fullback Zack Santolla (Roanoke, Va.) got the next score for E&H, notching a one-yard plunge of his own. Senior tight end Kenton Williams (Madison, Ind.) ran in the two-point conversion on a misdirection play to make the score 32-0.

With 1:40 remaining before intermission, Breed hit another field goal, this one from 30 yards out. After the E&H defense recovered a fumble with 18 seconds left on the Ferrum 27 yardline, Boden completed a pair of passes to junior wideout Lucas Kirby (Covington, Va.) including a 10-yarder for the touchdown. Breed's extra point made it 42-0 which would be the halftime score as the Wasps scored on all seven of their first half drives.

Ferrum got the ball to start the second half and it appeared that the E&H defense was going to hold yet again. After the Wasps muffed the punt, the Panthers' quarterback, Tim Reynolds, scampered 18 yards for the score.

E&H responded with a 10-play, 73-yard drive that took 5:02 off the clock. A 36-yard catch by Williams highlighted the drive which culminated with Turpin's second touchdown of the day.

Late in the fourth quarter, Ferrum third-string quarterback Troy Helton put together a scoring drive of 10 plays and 81 yards where he rushed for 64 yards of his own. His 10-yard touchdown run as time expired made the final score 49-13.

Emory & Henry racked up 463 yards of total offense including 331 through the air. Boden went 26-for-31 for 309 yards and three touchdowns. Williams caught eight passes for 77 yards and a touchdown while Kirby had seven catches for 70 yards and a score. Junior running back Kasey Jones (Jacksonville, Fla.) rushed 11 times for 49 yards while junior Joe Vaughn had 37 yards on nine carries.

Defensively for the Wasps, junior linebacker Paul Forney (Newton, N.C.) made nine tackles and picked off a pass. Sophomore linebacker Rennel Marshall (Rustburg, Va.) made five stops including 1.5 for loss while nine other E&H players had three or more tackles. Senior safety Jason Hill (Hickory, N.C.) and junior safety Robbie Gaines (Lewisburg, Pa.) each had interceptions for Emory & Henry.

Ferrum, which only had 179 yards of total offense on the day, was led by Reynolds as he went 6-for-16 through the air with 53 yard and rushed for 33 more and a touchdown. Helton had 64 yards and a touchdown while five different Panthers caught passes in the game.

The Ferrum defense was led by Tarrell Owens' 15 tackle performance while Anthony Orton and Shapiro Keeling made nine stops each with Keeling having a sack for five yards. Andre Brown finished the day with six tackles and one sack.

Emory & Henry will remain at home next Saturday when it hosts Maryville (Tenn.) College. It is the first time the Scots have traveled to Fred Selfe Stadium since 2000. Last year, the E&H defeated Maryville by a 21-8 score on a rainy afternoon on the road. Kickoff for next week's game is set for 2:00 p.m.
