Hampden-Sydney Football Takes Care Of Emory & Henry, 33-12, Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College Football Team (5-1, 3-0 ODAC) scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter as it defeated Emory & Henry College (3-3, 0-3 ODAC) Saturday afternoon at Fred Selfe Stadium. The contest was part of E&H's annual Homecoming festivities.

On the opening drive of the game, Hampden-Sydney went 70 yards in just five plays for a touchdown. Chris Shembo's 39-yard run to paydirt was the premier play of the possession. As the Tigers attempted to make it 7-0, senior corner back DeMikael Burse (Charlotte, N.C.) blocked the point after touchdown attempt. Sophomore linebacker Rennel Marshall (Rustburg, Va.) returned it for the defensive two-point conversion to settle the score at 6-2.

The Wasps took a 9-6 lead with their first offensive possession. Senior quarterback Kyle Boden had an 18-yard rush on third-and-13 to keep the drive alive, one of four third-down conversions.  Redshirt freshman fullback Jonathan Turpin (Wytheville, Va.) plunged in for a one-yard touchdown to cap the 14-play, 64-yard drive that melted 7:17 off the clock.

Hampden-Sydney regained the lead with a pair of second-quarter touchdowns. Nash Nance had a one-yard touchdown run for the first of the two scores and found Shembo with a two-yard pass for the second to go up 19-9.

Emory & Henry then put together a 14-play 64-yard drive for a field goal from junior Austin Breed (Atlanta, Ga.) with just 20 seconds remaining before the half and the 19-12 margin. E&H converted a big fourth down at the Tigers' 35 yardline as Boden found junior wide receiver Lucas Kirby (Covington, Va.) for a 18-yard catch to keep the drive alive.

After a scoreless third quarter, H-SC struck with a seven-yard touchdown pass from Nance to Joey Druhan on the first play of the fourth to push the advantage to 26-12.

With Emory & Henry driving to close the gap to one score, Charlie Shoemaker picked off Boden at the nine yardline and set up a 10-play 48-yard strike to put the game out of reach. Nance got his third touchdown pass of the game, connecting with Holton Walker in the front right corner of the end zone for the final 33-12 margin.

Nance finished the day with 225 yards on 21-for-32 passing and three scores while rushing for 20 yards and another touchdown. Brady Macko and Shembo each had over 50 rushing yards. Druhan caught four passes for 79 yards while Walker had six receptions for 55 yards. The Tigers had 360 yards of total offense on the day. Defensively, Shreve Rhole had a game-high 10 tackles while Robert Stack had nine stops. Tyler Ikwild had eight tackles including two for a loss.

Emory & Henry was led offensively by Boden's 196 passing yards with 20 completions. Vaughn led all rushers with 87 yards on 18 carries while junior running back Kasey Jones (Jacksonville, Fla.) had 41 yards on the ground. Senior wide receiver Chad Williams (Elkton, Va.) caught six passes for 74 yards while Kirby finished the day with 51 yards on four receptions.

E&H junior linebacker Randall Conley (Marion, N.C.) had a team-high eight tackles including 1.5 for a loss and a quarterback hurry. Burse made seven stops and added an interception, a pass breakup and a blocked kick. Junior safety Roth Healey (Easton, Pa.) and junior linebacker Paul Forney (Newton, N.C.) each had six tackles. Emory & Henry had 312 yards of offense on the day, 196 through the air and 116 on the ground.

Emory & Henry will travel to Our Nation's Capital next Saturday for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest with The Catholic University of America. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
