Skyler Simcox Named ODAC Offensive Player Of The Week

FOREST, Va. – Emory & Henry College freshman placekicker Skyler Simcox has been named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, ODAC officials announced Sunday. The Abingdon, Virginia native wins the award in just his third collegiate contest.

Simcox accounted for nine of Emory & Henry's 27 points in the Wasps' come-from-behind win over Division I FCS East Tennessee State University Saturday. The Abingdon High School product was a perfect three-for-three on his extra points and connected on a pair of 48-yard field goals.

After junior corner Tre'von Lightfoot (Big Island, Va.) picked off a pass for the only turnover of the afternoon, Simcox drilled a 48-yard field goal to tie the contest at 17 points apiece with 12:28 left to go in the third quarter. The freshman came through again later in the third quarter with another 48-yard kick, putting E&H ahead for the first time in the game, 20-17.

The two field goals tie for third all-time for longest field goal in the ODAC era of football and tie for the longest by an Emory & Henry kicker since 1976. They are the longest kicks made by any ODAC player since the 2011 season, when Randolph-Macon's Josh Storm hit a 49-yard attempt against Washington and Lee.

This week marks the first time under Head Coach Curt Newsome that the Wasps have swept the ODAC Football Player of the Week awards, as Simcox was tabbed as the Offensive Player of the Week. The last time an Emory & Henry pair shared the honors was in the final week of the 2012 season.

Emory & Henry (2-1) will open ODAC play next Saturday when it travels to face Randolph-Macon College (1-2) at Day Field. Kickoff between the Wasps and Yellow Jackets is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
