EMORY, Va. - Junior defensive back Tre'von Lightfoot has been Division III's version of a shutdown corner this season. With more than two-thirds of the DIII season in the books, Lightfoot leads the nation in passes defended with 17. Lightfoot stated, "To be able to lead the nation in passes defended is a sign of hard work paying off. Listening to my defensive backs coach Billy Ray Stutzmann, has allowed my technique to rise to an elite level."
The junior from Big Island, Va. has already broken up a career-high 13 passes and picked off a career-high four throws on the season. One of his interceptions, which he returned for a 98-yard touchdown last week at Catholic University, sealed a victory for the Wasps. Digging deeper into the numbers, Wasps' opponents have attempted 242 passes, which is the second most in the conference, with only a 55.8% completion rate. Lightfoot has allowed less than ten catches over the course of the year and his cover skills have helped the team earn the ODAC lead in turnovers with 17 on the year. The corner was also named ODAC defensive player of the week after a week one victory over Ferrum College, in which he tallied six tackles, two interceptions, and a pass breakup.
Lightfoot may not have many opportunities to improve upon his numbers this weekend versus Washington and Lee. The Generals, who lead the nation in rush yards per game, average only 6.2 times passes per game. In the last home game of the season, the Wasps will look for all the defensive backs to stop the run. About the upcoming matchup, Lightfoot went on to say, "The main point of focus this week for W&L is that everyone must read their keys and play their assignment. No more "my fault" football."
