EMORY, Va. - The Emory & Henry College Football Team (3-4, 2-2 ODAC) is on a two-game winning streak after defeating Bridgewater College (2-5, 1-3 ODAC) 42-33 last Saturday. With only two penalties and zero turnovers, the Wasps played a clean, efficient game to earn the victory. E&H also forced two turnovers and got to the quarterback five times on the day. Three of those five sacks came from sophomore defensive end Davon Keith (Columbia, S.C.), who was named ODAC Football Defensive Player of the Week. Keith finished the game with 14 tackles, six tackles for loss, and four quarterback hurries to go along with the three sacks. Keith will look to keep up the pressure as Emory & Henry takes on Hampden-Sydney College (2-5, 2-2 ODAC).
Series History
Last season, the Wasps suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Tigers on Homecoming Saturday. E&H jumped out to a 21-0 lead, but allowed 28-straight by HSC, eventually falling 31-28. Emory & Henry holds a 37-35 lead in the all-time series over Hampden-Sydney, but have not won since 2007.
Emory & Henry
For the past couple of games, E&H has been running a two-quarterback offense. Junior Kevin Saxton (Monroe, N.C.) and sophomore Dominic Dunnaville (Roanoke, Va.) have split time in the Wasps' two most-recent wins as both signal-callers have accounted for three touchdowns. Freshman wide receiver Derrick Yates (Abingdon, Va.) has scored a touchdown in each of his last five games. Along with his five touchdowns, he also leads the Wasps in targets (56) and catches (33). E&H will have the opportunity to put some points on the board Saturday as the Tigers give up the most points per game in the ODAC at 37.9 per game.
E&H's defense starts with the defensive line. The Wasps' front four have continued to excel, consistently making plays in the backfield. Last week, sophomore Josh Fleenor (Christiansburg, Va.) ran an interception for a touchdown in the win over Bridgewater. The 6-1, 280 pound defensive tackle has been unblockable for most and has 43 tackles and two sacks on the year. Sophomore defensive tackle Kash Jones (Gainesville, Ga.) has tallied 39 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Including Keith's 51 stops, these three linemen are amongst the top five in tackles in the ODAC along the defensive line.
Hampden-Sydney
Quarterback Alec Cobb and wide receiver Owen Costello have combined to make a prolific passing duo. Cobb has thrown for 1,635 yards and 14 touchdowns this season with Costello accounting for 583 yards and seven touchdowns on 40 catches. Despite the strong passing game, the Tigers have the worst rushing offense in the ODAC, averaging only 90 yards per contest. Because of that unbalanced offense, Hampden-Sydney is only averaging 24.4 points per game, which is near the bottom of the league. The defensive backs of Emory & Henry will likely face their toughest test of the season this week.
