Emory & Henry Football Preview – Week Two: Brevard

Emory & Henry Football Preview – Week Two: Brevard
EMORY, Va. - The Emory & Henry College Football team is coming off a season-opening loss to long-time rival and future Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent, Ferrum College. In the second iteration of the Crooked Road Classic, the Wasps were unable to hold the lead at the end of the game en route to a 13-8 defeat. E&H looks to rebound this week on the road at Brevard College.

Last Matchup
Emory & Henry's last game against Brevard was last season at home. The Wasps picked up a 28-14 win behind the play of quarterback Kevin Saxton (Monroe, N.C.), who passed for 205 yards and two scores, while running back Sam Wagner (Marion, Va.) paced the Wasps on the ground for 136 yards.

Emory & Henry
The defense was stout in the home opener, allowing just 169 yards, 18 of which were on the ground. The front seven lived in the backfield, combining for 13 tackles for loss. The three starting linebackers were dominant all game long, tallying 28 tackles including five for a loss.

Although the defense was firing on all cylinders, the offense struggled to find the endzone against the Panthers. The Wasps utilized three quarterbacks during the game, but none completed more than 46% of their passes. Three of the Wasps running backs had 11 carries or more. Freshman Brady Justice (Hurley, Va.) averaged 7.5 yards per carry on his 11 attempts.

Brevard
The Tornados of Brevard College dropped a 30-7 decision to Division I opponent, Davidson College last week. Brevard threw the ball early and often as their quarterback finished with 43 attempts. BC struggled to find the endzone, which was indicated by their 11 punts on the day. On the defensive side, linebacker Jason Nieradka was all over the field, tallying 17 tackles on the day for the Tornados.

Key Matchup
The Wasps' defensive line certainly is their anchor. In last week's game, Kash Jones (Gainesville, Ga.) was a stat-sheet-stuffer, finishing with six tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and a sack. Defensive tackle Josh Fleenor (Christiansburg, Va.) had four tackles and broke up three passes. Preseason All-American, Da'von Keith (Columbia, S.C.) amassed five tackles of his own, two of which were for a loss. This unit is experienced and dominant, while the Tornados are likely to start five freshmen on the offensive line.
