Emory & Henry Football Preview – Week Three: Maryville

Emory & Henry Football Preview – Week Three: Maryville
EMORY, Va. - The Emory & Henry College offense came into its own last week at Brevard College. With a 48-13 win, the Wasps scored their most points since the 2015 season. E&H came out as if it were fired from a cannon, amassing 535 total yards against the Tornados. Four players gained over 50 yards on the ground, three of whom were freshmen. Emory & Henry will look for fresh legs as it hosts Maryville (Tenn.) College on Saturday.

Last Meeting
Last season's meeting at Maryville was a high-scoring affair. The Scots edged out the Wasps by a 43-36 score. In the game, E&H gained 552 total yards, but was tripped up by penalties, in which the team gave up 121 yards. Emory & Henry will need to be disciplined in order to beat the Maryville this season.

Emory & Henry
The strengths of the E&H (1-1) have been its stable of running backs and rush defense thus far. The Wasps have four running backs that have been rotating in, each brining a different look to challenge opposing defenses. Freshman Brady Justice (Hurley, Va.) paces the Wasps in rushing with 145 yards on the ground and a whopping 12 broken tackles.

On the defensive side of the ball, E&H is only allowing 36 rush yards per game. Sophomore Harlan Faddis (Atlanta, Ga.) has made it his mission that no runner even reaches the line of scrimmage. He leads the team in tackles with 17 and tackles for loss with 4.5.

Maryville
The Scots are 1-1 after the first two weeks this season. Maryville has utilized their passing game more often than not so far. With the team only averaging 74 rushing yards a game, a lot of emphasis will be on the E&H defensive backs. Senior wide receiver Michael Smith will likely be the go-to player for the Scots.

Key Matchup - WR Derrick Yates (Abingdon, Va.) vs. CB Ethan Williams
Yates leads the Wasps in every receiving category so far. He has 14 catches on 27 targets for 209 yards and two touchdowns. He continues to be the favorite for each of E&H's quarterbacks. He will likely face off with Preseason All-American Ethan Williams. Williams tallied six interceptions and 12 pass breakups last year and he looks to continue that success this year.
