EMORY, Va. - Emory & Henry College Football Team is coming off a huge win to open Old Dominion Athletic Conference play last week. In the waning seconds of the game,
Brady Justice (Hurley, Va.) gave E&H the points it needed to take down Washington and Lee University. That one-yard run with 11 seconds remaining was the freshman's third touchdown in the 45-42 victory, which improved the Wasps to 2-2 (1-0 ODAC) on the year. Last week, Emory & Henry's main focus was to stop the run; this week, the Wasps head to face the Hornets of Shenandoah University and will take on one of the top passing attacks in the country.
Last Meeting
In last season's game at Emory, the Wasps lost 36-33 in a heart-breaker. E&H saw a 13-point lead melt away as the Hornets scored 28 unanswered points. Special teams was the Achilles' Heel for E&H, as the Wasps gave up 178 return yards. The offense did perform well, outgaining the Hornets 649-376 in the ODAC showdown.
Emory & Henry
Offensively, the Wasps are led on the ground by Justice. The freshman leads the team in carries (53), yards (330), touchdowns (five), and broken tackles (20). His running power will be crucial in defeating a team that gives up 240 rushing yards per game.
Derrick Yates (Abingdon, Va.) and
Jesse Santiago (Yorktown, Va.) continue to be a dynamic duo for the Wasps at receiver. The two combine for 74% of the team's receiving yards and have a combined 83 targets.
Defensively, the Wasps have had great success in forcing and recovering fumbles. With seven recoveries on the year, E&H currently leads the ODAC. The defense has also scored twice this season. Emory & Henry boasts four of the top six tacklers in the league to boot.
Shenandoah
Shenandoah has one of the top passing attacks in all of the country, and the best in the ODAC. Quarterback Hayden Bauserman is coming off a 559-yard, six touchdown game last week at Randolph-Macon College. He is the key to the Hornets' success. Defensively, SU has done a good job getting to the quarterback as three of the top five pass rushers in the conference line up for Shenandoah.
Key Matchup - Kevin Saxton (Monroe, N.C.) vs. Hayden Bauserman
Although they do not play against each other on the field, this game will likely come down to quarterback play. Bauserman leads in statistical categories with 1,590 yards and 19 touchdowns, but Saxton is doing the thing that all head coaches want from their quarterback - protecting the football. Through four games, Saxton has yet to commit a turnover and is leading his team to 36.4 points per game. In a game where both offenses have been able to light up the scoreboard, it may come to which quarterback doesn't make a crucial mistake.
