Emory & Henry Football Beats Bridgewater, 38-17, Saturday At Home

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Football Team (3-1) concluded its three-game homestand with a 38-17 win over Bridgewater College (2-2) Saturday afternoon. For the second week in a row, the Wasps rushed for over 300 yards and gained more than 500 yards of total offense.

How It Happened
   Bridgewater took the opening drive and went 61 yards in 10 plays for a 7-0 lead on a 13-yard run by Viante Tucker. Emory & Henry knotted the game, 7-7, on the next possession capped by a four-yard run by senior running back Devontae Jordan (Bassett, Va.).
   After junior defensive lineman Jay Swegheimer (Orlando, Fla.) picked off a pass in the backfield, the Wasps went back on offense, scoring two plays later on a 10-yard scamper by sophomore quarterback Kyle Short (Lebanon, Ohio) to go up 14-7.
   E&H pushed the margin to 21-7 at the end of the first quarter as Short found senior wideout Kashawn Cosey (Chattanooga, Tenn.) with a 38-yard catch and run.
   In the second, the Wasps went ahead 28-7 as Jordan scored his second touchdown of the half, this time from six yards out. The Eagles found the end zone on a pass from Matt Lawton which hit Tucker for an 11-yard score. BC closed the gap to 28-17 with a 48-yard field goal from Jackson Hendren as time expired.
  The third quarter saw the Wasps go ahead 35-17 as Jordan got his third touchdown of the day, plunging in from two yards out. Emory & Henry capped the scoring with 42 seconds to go in the game as junior Cameron Jones (Jacksonville, N.C.) hit a 37-yard field goal for the 38-17 final margin.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
   Jordan went over 200 yards for the second week in a row, scoring three times on 38 carries for 219 yards while Short finished with 60 yards on the ground and another touchdown as he went 14-for-23 through the air for 177 yards and a score.
   Cosey led all players with eight catches for 108 yards including his 38-yard touchdown reception while sophomore Jermawn Ford (District Heights, Md.) caught four balls for 62 yards.
   Sophomore defensive back Addison Knicely (Mount Crawford, Va.) had a team-high six tackles and added an interception while junior defensive back T.J. Payne (Chattanooga, Tenn.) had five stops and two passes defended. Senior defensive lineman Donovan Pinnix (Eden, N.C.) and senior defensive back Zyquis Law (Charlotte, N.C.) added five stop apiece as Swegheimer made two tackles in the backfield to go along with his interception.

Bridgewater Individual Leaders
   Lawton threw for 108 yards and one touchdown on 12-for-24 passing but was intercepted twice while Kenneth McCray had three completions for 62 yards in relief.
   Demetreus Jelepes was the Eagles' leading rusher with 52 yards while Derrick Jenkins caught six passes for 43 yards.
   Defensively, Brett Tharp made a game-high 14 tackles while Nazeer Jordan was close behind with 11 stops. Val West had nine tackles and pass defended as Shawn Harris went for seven stops and a fumble recovery.

A Deeper Look
   Emory & Henry gained more than 500 yards for the second week in a row, finishing with 509 yards compared to 234 for Bridgewater. The Wasps averaged 6.1 yards per play and were 7-for-15 (46.6%) on third down.

   Emory & Henry will be off next week on its scheduled bye week and will return to action at Randolph-Macon College on Saturday, October 9 at 1:00 p.m.
