EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Football Team (4-2) scored 17 points off turnovers on its way to a 37-13 win over Hampden-Sydney College (2-4) Saturday afternoon. The contest between the Wasps and Tigers served as the highlight of the 2021 Homecoming Weekend festivities.

How It Happened
Emory & Henry got on the board just 12 seconds into the contest as freshman defensive back Jo'-el Howard (Stuarts Draft, Va.) took the opening kickoff and returned it 96 yards for a touchdown. The Wasps made it a 13-0 contest with 12:32 on the clock in the opening quarter as senior defensive back Jaylyn Kreimes (Sharps, Va.) blocked a punt that was recovered by freshman wide receiver Jack Crumblish (Clermont, Fla.) and returned 31 yards for a score.
After recovering a fumble on the ensuing drive, E&H pushed its lead to 20-0 thanks to a 30-yard rush by senior running back Devontae Jordan (Bassett, Va.).
In the second quarter, Hampden-Sydney got on the board as Tanner Bernard hit Dillon Costello with a 14-yard pass, making the score 20-7. E&H made the halftime margin 23-7 with a 35-yard field goal by junior kicker Cameron Jones (Jacksonville, N.C.).
The Tigers got a pair of field goals from Palmer Smith in the third quarter to draw the margin to 23-13 as he connected from 30 and 31 yards out.
E&H sealed the victory in the fourth quarter as it held the ball for 10:34. Jordan got his second score of the game, rushing in from nine yards out to make it a 30-13 game. An interception by sophomore defensive back Addison Knicely (Mount Crawford, Va.) set up a 13-play, 71-yard drive for the Wasps that was culminated by a one-yard surge by sophomore quarterback Kyle Short (Lebanon, Ohio) for the final score, 37-13.
Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
Jordan rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns, his sixth 100-yard game of the year. He has 1,107 yards on the year, the first Wasp to go over the 1,000-yard mark on the ground since Caleb Jennings accomplished the feat in 2010.
Short finished the game with 37 yards on the ground and one touchdown and went 11-for-17 through the air for 118 yards despite three interceptions. Senior wideout Kashawn Cosey (Chattanooga, Tenn.) caught six balls for 65 yards to lead the Wasps' corps of receivers.
Knicely led the Wasps with seven tackles, a forced fumble, an interception and an additional pass defended while fifth-year defensive lineman Deondre Chambliss (Chattanooga, Tenn.) also had seven stops and an interception. Junior defensive back T.J. Payne (Chattanooga, Tenn.) went for three tackles, a 21-yard fumble return and two passes defended while seniors Donovan Pinnix (Eden, N.C.) and Ivan Phillips (Kingsport, Tenn.) added seven stops apiece.
Hampden-Sydney Individual Leaders
Bernard went 16-for-37 for 163 yards two one touchdown and two interceptions. He hit Ed Newman six times for 42 yards while Braeden Bowling had four catches for 45 yards. Costello scored his touchdown on two receptions for 23 yards.
Kaleb Smith was the leading rusher with 33 yards on 11 carries as HSC only gained 29 yards on the ground.
Defensively, Will Pickren had 11 tackles and an interception to lead the Tigers while James-Ryan Salvi went for 10 stops and a pass defended. Tobias Lafayette picked off two passes to go along with three tackles.
A Deeper Look
Emory & Henry outgained Hampden-Sydney by a 319-226 margin and added 194 return yards for 513 all-purpose yards on the afternoon. The Wasps held a 31:08-28:52 lead on time of possession and were 7-for-13 (54%) on third-down conversions.
E&H was penalized 11 times for 192 yards while the Tigers were flagged six times for 40 yards.
