Shenandoah Football Defeats Emory & Henry, 9-7, With Last-Second Field Goal Saturday

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University Football Team (5-2) overcame four turnovers as it squeaked out a 9-7 win against Emory & Henry College Football Team (4-3) Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened
   E&H got on the board at the 1:17 mark of the first quarter as senior running back Devontae Jordan (Bassett, Va.) plunged in from six yards out.  The two teams battled back and forth through the second with neither squad able to find the end zone as the score went into the break, 7-0.
   In the third, the Hornets closed the gap to 7-6 late in the third on a one-yard run by Rashadeen Byrd, Jr. but were unable to tie things up as Patrick Ritchie's extra-point was no good.
   The fourth quarter was more of the same as neither team was able to get much offense going. Shenandoah regained possession with 1:49 on the clock at their own 45 yardline and got into range for a last-second field goal by Ritchie from 40 yards out as the Hornets escaped with the 9-7 win.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
   Jordan finished with 168 rushing yards on 36 attempts while sophomore quarterback Kyle Short (Lebanon, Ohio) was 11-for-22 through the air for just 57 yards and an interception while he ran for another 38 yards.
   Sophomore wideout Jermawn Ford (District Heights, Md.) led the Wasps with three catches for 32 yards while junior tight end Zach Venhorst (Lynchburg, Va.) also caught three balls on the day.
   Junior defensive back T.J. Tester (Moneta, Va.) paced the defensive unit with nine tackles including 3.5 for a loss while redshirt-freshman defensive back Gage Mannon (Pulaski, Va.) went for eight tackles. Senior defensive back Zyquis Law (Charlotte, N.C.) had an interception which he returned 42 yards while seniors Ivan Phillips (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Ty Easley (Gladys, Va.) also picked off passes.

Shenandoah Individual Leaders
   Zack Mathis went 16-for-23 through the air for 86 yards as he threw one pick while Steven Hugney was 10-for-21 for 64 yards with three interceptions.
   Byrd, Jr. picked up 43 yards on the ground with his touchdown while Gary Garlic gained 42 yards.
   Brant Butler led the Hornets' receivers with six receptions for 67 yards as Ethan Bigbee catching 11 passes for 27 yards.
   Ben Burgan posted a game-high 16 tackles with four tackles for a loss while David Agyei added 10 stops. Ahoyon Boothe went for nine tackles and an interception with a forced fumble while Nigel Duberry went for eight tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

   Emory & Henry returns home next Saturday to host Washington and Lee University at 1:00 p.m.
