Lynchburg Men’s Basketball Downs Emory & Henry, 87-73, Wednesday In ODAC Action

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Lynchburg College Men's Basketball Team (14-3, 4-3 ODAC) used an 18-5 run covering 5:13 of the second half to build an insurmountable lead against Emory & Henry College (3-11, 1-6 ODAC) Wednesday evening at Turner Gymnasium. The Hornets would go on to win, 87-73, in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup.

Emory & Henry led early but a 12-0 run gave Lynchburg a 15-4 advantage at the 13:14 mark of the first half. The Wasps trimmed the deficit to five (21-16) thanks to back to back baskets by junior guard Stephen Brown (Charleston, S.C.) with 7:23 on the clock. After LC pushed the lead back to double digits, E&H finished the half with a 9-0 run to go into the locker room down by just three points (39-36).

The two squads traded baskets through the first three and a half minutes of the second period, but then Lynchburg went on its 18-5 run to make the score 64-47 with 11:31 on the clock. The Wasps put scored nine of the next 11 points to make the score 66-56, but the Hornets responded with a 10-3 scoring spurt for the largest lead of the game (76-59) with 7:02 remaining. Emory & Henry would get no closer than 12 points the rest of the way as Lynchburg cruised to the 87-73 league win.

LC's Manny Hernandez led all scorers with 20 points as he went 9-for-10 from the free throw line and added four rebounds and two assists. Austin Chillemi registered 17 points and seven boards to go along with three blocks. Michael Wims, Xavier Parham, and Andrew Simmons each chipped in nine points with Wims pulling down a game-high 10 points and three blocks.

As a team, the Hornets shot 42.7 percent (32-for-75) for the game and held a 43-38 advantage on the boards and outscored the Wasps, 26-14, on possessions off turnovers.

Brown finished the night with 14 points for Emory & Henry as he went 6-for-12 from the field, hitting two from beyond the arc. He also had three rebounds and two assists in the contest. Senior forward Armando Murrell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and freshman guard Kevin Anzenberger (Concord, N.C.) both had 11 points as Anzenberger hit a game-high three treys. Junior forward Tyler Mullins (Hazard, Ky.) pitched in 10 points, six rebounds and three assists for the Wasps.

E&H was plagued by 25 turnovers but still shot 25-for-58 (43.1 percent) from the field in the setback.

The Wasps will return home on Saturday as they host the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College at Bob Johnson Court. Tipoff for the ODAC contest is set for 2:00 p.m.
