SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College Men's Basketball Team (1-1) shot 55.6 percent (15-of-27) in the second half as it was able to pull away from Emory & Henry College for an 83-56 victory Monday evening at Benjamin Johnson Arena. The contest served as the Wasps' annual exhibition game.
The game was close early before the Terriers used five-straight points to build a 15-9 lead at the 14:57 mark of the first half. E&H responded with six straight to tie things at 15 points. Down by five later in the half, the Wasps put up a 7-1 run to take a 28-27 with 4:28 on the clock. Wofford then notched a 13-0 run for a 40-28 lead but E&H closed the half with seven straight to make the score 40-35 at the intermission.
The Terriers, coached by Emory & Henry alumnus Mike Young, came out strong, scoring the first 14 points of the second half to open up a 54-35 lead. The Wasps did not go down quietly, and chipped the deficit down to 15 (66-51) with 11:22 remaining. Wofford then went on a 11-0 run to put some distance between the two squads, leading by as much as 29 points (83-54) late in the game. E&H scored the final four points of the game for the final 83-58 margin.
Wofford placed three players in double figures in scoring led by Spencer Collins with 16 points and four rebounds. Karl Cochran had 12 points and six boards while Jaylen Allen chipped in 13 points. As a team, the Terriers shot 50.8 percent (30-of-59) for the game, scored 44 points in the paint and 19 off of turnovers.
Emory & Henry was led by senior guard Stephen Brown's (Charleston, S.C.) 15-point night as he hit two three-pointers and pulled down five rebounds. Sophomore guard Myles Turner (Richmond, Va.) registered 14 points, four assists and three rebounds while sophomore guard Kevin Anzenberger (Concord, N.C.) and senior forward Charles Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.) added eight and six points, respectively.
The Wasps shot 54.2 percent (13-of-24) in the first half, but their percentage fell off in the second 20 minutes against the larger, quicker Terriers.
E&H will open the regular season on Friday evening when it faces off against Huntingdon College in the Berry Classic. Tipoff between the Wasps and Hawks is set for 4:00 p.m.
