Virginia Intermont Men’s Basketball Takes Down Emory & Henry, 82-71, Tuesday Evening

EMORY, Va. – The Virginia Intermont College Men's Basketball Team (2-6) picked up a 82-71 victory over Emory & Henry College (2-5) Tuesday evening at the John Rutledge King Center and Bob Johnson Court. The Cobras shot 52.0 percent in the second half en route to the victory.

Emory & Henry got out to an 8-2 lead in the first 1:55 of the game but a 10-2 run by Virginia Intermont gave the Cobras a 12-10 advantage at the 15:24 mark. VI pushed the margin to eight (22-14) however E&H responded by scoring 11 of the next 12 points to go up 25-23. With the score tied at 30 and under 2:00 to go before the break, Virginia Intermont finished the half on a 6-0 run for a 36-30 lead.

The Cobras picked up where they left off in the opening moments of the second half, pushing their lead to 13 with a 10-3 run (46-33). Emory & Henry closed the gap to nine with 14:38 remaining, but a 12-4 run by VI gave it a 64-47 lead. Despite making several runs in the final 10 minutes of the game, the E&H would get no closer than 11 as the Cobras had an answer for the Wasps' offense.

Virginia Intermont placed five players in double figures in scoring led by Ben Sealey and Kris Harris, who had 20 points each. Joshua Hart added 14 points and four rebounds while Tyrone Smith and J.D. Tucker had 11 and 10 points, respectively. Max Sorokin notched seven points and nine rebounds.

Emory & Henry was led by senior forward Charles Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.) with 17 points as he went seven-for-10 from the field and added three free throws. Senior guard Malcolm Green (Marshville, N.C.) had 13 points and nine rebounds while senior forward Tyler Mullins (Hazard, Ky.) added five points, eight rebounds and four assists.

The Wasps shot 42.6 percent (26-for-61) from the floor in the game and out-rebounded the Cobras by a 40-31 margin. E&H shot well from the free throw line, going 11-for-15 (73.3%) for the game but fell victim to 22 turnovers.

E&H will next take the court on Tuesday, December 10 when it travels to Banner Elk, N.C. to face off against Lees-McRae College. The Wasps will take on the NCAA Division II Bobcats in Williams Gym at 7:00 p.m.
