Eastern Mennonite Men’s Basketball Outlasts Emory & Henry, 84-75, Saturday In ODAC Action

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Eastern Mennonite University Men's Basketball Team (15-10, 10-6 ODAC) need to score 10 of the last 12 points of the game in order to defeat visiting Emory & Henry College (4-21, 2-14 ODAC) Saturday evening at Yoder Arena.

The Wasps started out with an 8-3 lead at the 16:07 mark of the first half but the Royals came back to tie things at eight less than a minute later. The two squads traded baskets for the majority of the opening period and found themselves tied at 21 with 8:40 to go before the break. EMU pulled away by as much as eight but E&H got the margin back to three points, 39-36 at the half.

Coming out of the intermission, Emory & Henry tied the contest at 41 points apiece, but an 11-4 run by Eastern Mennonite made it 52-45 with 16:14 left in the game. The Wasps battled back to make it a 55-54 game, never letting the Royals get too far ahead. Down by seven with less than four minutes to go, Emory & Henry scored seven of the next eight points to cut the margin to 74-73 with 2:36 on the clock. EMU was able to hit several key field goals down the stretch as it came away with the 84-75 victory.

David Falk led all players with 22 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocked shots for Eastern Mennonite. Marcel Crump added 15 points and nine rebounds while R.J. Sims tallied 16 points. The Royals shot 50.9 percent (28-for-55) for the game and hit seven of their 14 three-point attempts. EMU also made 21 free throws compared to just four for E&H.

Emory & Henry senior guard Malcolm Green (Marshville, N.C.) had 18 points, five rebounds and four steals while senior forward Charles Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.) tied his career high for the second-straight game with 18 points, pulling down five boards in the process. Freshman guard Ryan Gravley (Austinville, Va.) registered 13 points and five assists from his point guard spot while freshman forward Brandon Self (Norfolk, Va.) notched four points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

As a team, E&H shot 41.6 percent (32-for-77) for the game and made seven-of-15 three's. The Wasps held a 42-39 rebounding advantage and won the battle down low, 44-34, on points in the paint.

Emory & Henry will turn around and head back to Yoder Arena on Tuesday evening for the first round of the 2014 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament. The Wasps and Royals are set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
