Emory & Henry Men’s Basketball Drops Triple-Overtime Thriller To Southern Virginia, 110-101, Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Basketball Team (0-1) opened the 2014-15 season with a 110-101 triple overtime loss to Southern Virginia University (1-0) Saturday evening at Bob Johnson Court. Emory & Henry eclipsed the 100-point mark for the first time since February 2, 2011, when it put up 104 against Greensboro College in what was also a triple overtime contest.

Much of the first half was tightly contested, before Southern Virginia went on a 15-3 run to take a 21-31 lead. Emory & Henry clawed its way back into the game, tying the contest on a three by freshman wing John Shelor (Giles, Va.). The Wasps ended the opening 20 minutes on a layup by sophomore guard Myles Turner (Richmond, Va.) to enter the locker room with a 46-45 advantage.

Up by two at the 14:01 mark of the second half, the SVU went on a 15-2 run to open up its largest lead of the game, 73-60. The Wasps answered with a 10-2 spurt and cut the Southern Virginia margin to four with 3:40 to go in the contest. Turner connected on a pair of free throws, tying the game at 82 with 34 seconds remaining. The Wasps' defense held strong in the final possession of regulation to send the game into overtime.

The first overtime was highlighted by sophomore forward Brandon Self's (Norfolk, Va.) four points, which included a powerful dunk to give the Wasps a two-point lead. The Knights answered with a layup of their own with 1:13 remaining to send the game into double overtime tied at 86.

Emory & Henry scored the first four points of the second extra period, but an 8-1 run by the Knights gave them a 94-91 lead with 19 seconds remaining. E&H went on to score the next five points, including a three by Turner as time expired, to send the game into triple overtime.

The Knights opened up the third overtime with an 8-0 run to take control. E&H answered with four points to make the score 104-99, but would get no closer as Southern Virginia went on to win the game by a final score of 110-101.

SVU's Preston Eaton led all scorers with 35 points, hitting all 13 of his free throw attempts. Kevin Walker added 13 points off the bench on five-for-six shooting. The Knights won the battle on the boards 60-41, including 22 offensive rebounds.

Emory & Henry placed four scorers in double figures led by Turner with 26 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Sophomore guard Ryan Gravley (Austinville, Va.) had 25 points, five rebounds, and three assists.  Self and Shelor each finished the game with 17 points, while Self added nine rebounds and seven blocks.

The Wasps will remain at home on Tuesday night when it hosts Maryville College in the John Rutledge King Center for a 7:00 p.m., tipoff.
