Emory & Henry Men’s Basketball Defeats Shenandoah, 81-76, Saturday At Home

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Basketball Team (2-11, 1-3 ODAC) picked up its first ODAC win of the season Saturday afternoon, 81-76, over Shenandoah University (1-12, 0-4 ODAC) at Bob Johnson Court. With the victory, the Wasps snapped a four-game losing streak.

E&H jumped out to a 16-1 lead at the 14:15 mark of the first half. The Hornets cut the margin to 22-13 thanks to a 12-6 run but the Wasps scored the next six points to push their lead back to 15 with 8:25 on the clock. Shenandoah answered back, scoring 17 of the next 23 points to trim the margin to 34-30 but Emory & Henry would lead 43-35 at intermission.

Coming out of the break, the Wasps extended their advantage to 48-37, scoring five of the first seven points of the second half. Shenandoah slowly began to chip away at the Emory & Henry lead, going ahead for the first time in the game with 8:15 left to play, 65-64. SU would lead by three moments later, but a 9-0 run by E&H covering 2:36 put the Wasps up for good.

The Hornets made things interesting in the final 30 seconds of the game, getting to within two (78-76) but freshman guard John Shelor (Giles, Va.) hit three of four free throws in the closing 12 seconds to seal the win for Emory & Henry.

All five of E&H's starters reached double figures in the game led by sophomore guard Myles Turner (Richmond, Va.), who put up 20 points, 11 rebounds and four assists, going 9-for-10 from the free throw line. Junior guard Kevin Anzenberger (Concord, N.C.) had a career night, topping his former personal best of 13 points in the first half and finishing with 17 points and eight boards. Sophomore forward Brandon Self (Norfolk, Va.) and sophomore guard Ryan Gravley (Austinville, Va.) both added 11 points while Shelor chipped in 10.

As a team, the Wasps shot 50.9 percent (27-for-53) for the game, hitting seven three-pointers. E&H converted 20-of-26 (76.9%) of its free throws and held a 38-24 advantage on points in the paint.

Antwan Pittman and Malcolm Clark paced Shenandoah's offense, each scoring 20 points off the bench. The duo propelled the Hornets to a 53-12 advantage on bench points as Pittman pulled down eight boards and shot 7-for-11 from the field. Clark converted 10-of-13 free throws and had five rebounds and four steals prior to fouling out.

SU shot just 38.9 percent (21-for-54) from the field and used 12 offensive boards to post 13 second-chance points. However, 17 turnovers, including eight player control fouls, caused the Hornets to miss out on key possessions late in both the first and second halves.

Emory & Henry will be on the road on Wednesday when it travels to Lynchburg, Virginia for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup with Randolph College. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
