No. 11 Randolph-Macon Men’s Basketball Defeats Emory & Henry, 69-53, Saturday In ODAC Action

ASHLAND, Va. – The No. 11 Randolph-Macon College Men's Basketball Team (15-2, 8-0 ODAC) hit eight three-pointers in the second half to defeat visiting Emory & Henry College (3-14, 2-6 ODAC) by a 69-53 score at Crenshaw Gymnasium in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.

The Wasps led briefly in the early moments of the game, but a 15-4 run by R-MC gave the Yellow Jackets a 16-7 advantage with just under 12 minutes to go before the break. Emory & Henry cut the lead to five, however Randolph-Macon took a 25-15 advantage into halftime. Both teams struggled to find their shot in the opening 20 minutes of play with E&H shooting 6-for-20 (20%) and R-MC 25.7% (9-for-35).

Randolph-Macon opened the scoring up in the first five and a half minutes of the second period, extending its lead to 36-21. The Wasps responded with an 11-0 run to make the score 36-33 and would remain within three possessions until a 17-2 scoring spurt by the Yellow Jackets gave them a 58-40 advantage with 6:05 left to play. R-MC pushed the margin to 22 at the 3:12 mark, but E&H scored nine of the game's final 12 points to close the gap to the 69-53 final score.

Joe Hassell led the Yellow Jackets with 13 points on five-for-seven shooting from the field and added four rebounds while Mike Silverthorn connected on four three-pointers for his 12 points of the afternoon. Michael Taylor had 11 points and five boards off the bench while Akeem Holmes notched six points and added seven rebounds and Marcus Badger registered seven points, four rebounds and five assists.

As a team, Randolph-Macon shot 53.3 percent (16-for-30) in the second half to improve their field goal percentage to 38.5 percent for the game. The Yellow Jackets led by a 23-6 margin on points off turnovers after forcing the Wasps into 16 miscues.

Emory & Henry sophomore guard Myles Turner (Richmond, Va.) led all players with 22 points and added nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Ryan Gravley (Austinville, Va.) and freshman guard John Shelor (Giles, Va.) each had nine points and three rebounds as Gravley added five assists. Sophomore forward Brandon Self (Norfolk, Va.) led all players as he collected 13 rebounds.

E&H finished the game with at 31 percent (18-for-38) field goal shooting and converted 12-of-15 (80%) of its free throws. The Wasps out-rebounded the Yellow Jackets, 46-39, but were unable to respond to the strong second half run.

Emory & Henry will return home to Bob Johnson Court for an ODAC contest against Guilford College on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
