Emory & Henry Men’s Basketball Uses Late Rally To Defeat Bridgewater, 72-68, Wednesday On The Road

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Basketball Team (4-18, 3-10 ODAC) used a 15-4 run over the final 6:48 of the contest as it rallied for a 72-68 win over Bridgewater College (10-12, 5-8 ODAC) Wednesday evening at Nininger Hall.

E&H got out to a 6-0 lead at the 17:13 mark of the first half. Bridgewater responded to tie the game six times in the opening 10 minutes and final took the lead with 8:16 to go before halftime. The Wasps kept the margin close, but the Eagles extended their lead to 38-33 at the intermission.

A basket by BC to open the second half pushed the margin back to seven, but Emory & Henry answered with a 5-0 run to close the gap to two points on a three-pointer by freshman guard John Shelor (Giles, Va.). Each attempt by the Eagles to get a sizable lead was met with a counterattack by the Wasps.

The fourth time that Bridgewater pushed its advantage to seven points was the last as Emory & Henry scored 10 points in a row to go up 67-64, its first lead since the 9:47 mark of the first half. The Wasps led by as much as five points down the stretch, holding off an attempt at a comeback by the Eagles for the 72-68 conference win.

Junior guard Kevin Anzenberger (Concord, N.C.) had a career-high 22 points to go along with seven rebounds for the Wasps while freshman forward Chase Branscomb (Bristol, Tenn.) had his career-best game with 13 points and seven boards as well. Sophomore guard Myles Turner (Richmond, Va.) added 13 points, five assists, three rebounds and three steals while sophomore forward Brandon Self (Norfolk, Va.) notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.

E&H shot 37.5 percent (24-for-64) as a team and hit six three-pointers in the game. The Wasps were also 18-for-23 (78.3%) from the free throw line and held a 28-24 advantage on points in the paint. Emory & Henry won the battle of the boards, 43-41, which translated to a 13-9 lead on second-chance points.

Ed Reddick notched a team-high 20 points to go along with seven rebounds for Bridgewater while Kyle Welty registered 14 points, 12 boards and three assists for the double-double. The Eagles shot 24-for-60 (40%) for the game but a disadvantage of two points at the free throw line and two less three-pointers made the four-point contest.

Emory & Henry will remain on the road on Saturday when it travels to face Eastern Mennonite University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. Tipoff between the Wasps and Royals is set for 7:00 p.m.
