Emory & Henry Men's Basketball Holds Off Rally By Southern Virginia, 75-72, Tuesday Evening

BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Emory & Henry College Men's Basketball Team evened its season record at 1-1 Tuesday evening as it held off a furious second-half rally by Southern Virginia University (0-1) to win, 75-72, on the road. The contest lacked the flow of a normal basketball game with 65 fouls resulting in 75 free throw attempt and a total of 44 turnovers between the two teams.

Emory & Henry jumped out to a 13-2 lead at the 16:31 mark of the first half and pushed its advantage to 24 (41-17) with 4:07 to go before the intermission. Sophomore guard John Shelor (Giles, Va.) scored 16 of his 19 points in the opening period, connected on four-of-four attempts from long range while junior forward Brandon Self (Norfolk, Va.) scored 10 of his 13 points in the opening 20 minutes. The Wasps shot 53.3 percent (16-for-30) from the field and held a 16-4 lead on points off turnovers in the first half for a 43-22 halftime advantage.

After the break, E&H extended its advantage to 26 points, scoring the first five points of the second half, 48-22. The Knights began to fight their way back into the game, chipping away at the deficit slowly over the closing period. A 10-3 run by SVU got the margin to under 20 and later an 18-4 run which covered nearly six minutes closed the gap to 60-54 with 5:43 to play.

Southern Virginia got to within five for the first time since the 18:04 mark of the first half with 2:19 remaining and was able get within two (72-70) with 25 seconds left. Emory & Henry made free throws when it needed to down the stretch, holding off the Knights for the 75-72 victory.

Shelor and junior guard Ryan Gravley (Austinville, Va.) both had a team-high 19 points with Gravley going 11-for-15 from the free throw line. Shelor was five-for-seven from long range and the pair added two rebounds each in the game. Self finished with 13 points and seven boards while freshman Alic Wynn (Asheville, N.C.) hit double figures with 11 points on four-for-four shooting with five rebounds and three steals.

SVU was led by Kevin Walker's 21-point performance going six-for-12 from the field and six-for-seven from the line. Anders Jacobson added 15 points hitting all six of his free throws and Cale Thornton pitched in 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Emory & Henry will remain on the road on Saturday when it travels to face Maryville (Tenn.) College at 3:00 p.m.
