Calvin Men’s Basketball Defeats Emory & Henry, 97-73, In St. Pete Classic Thursday Morning

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Calvin College Men's Basketball Team (4-5) shot 55 percent for the game on its way to a 97-73 win over Emory & Henry College (2-6) in day one of the St. Pete Classic. The event is being held on the campus of Eckerd College.

How It Happened
- The two teams traded baskets on the way to an 8-5 E&H lead at the 15:28 mark of the first half. Calvin then went on a 12-4 run to make the score 20-12 with 9:41 on the clock.
- An 8-3 run by the Wasps closed the gap to 28-25 with 4:23 remaining before the Knights charged through the final minutes of the period to take a 41-31 lead at the intermission.
- Coming out of the break, Calvin ran its lead to 17 with a 13-4 scoring spurt which covered 4:09. Later in the half, the Wasps scored six in a row to draw the margin within 11 (58-47) but the Knights responded with a 15-3 run to push their advantage to 73-50 with 8:39 to play.
- Calvin led by as much as 31 down the stretch but E&H scored 10 of the last 14 points of the game to make the final score 97-73.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Freshman guard Kevin Grau Rodriguez (Tampa, Fla.) led the Wasps with 14 points, adding five rebounds and three steals while senior guard Jamie Clarke (Lexington, S.C.) had 11 points and two boards off the bench.
- Sophomore guard Micah Banks (Simpsonville, S.C.) tacked on 10 points and seven rebounds.

Calvin Individual Leaders
- Derrick DeVries put up a game-high 26 points, nine rebounds and six assists, going 11-for-16 from the field. Emmett Warners had 21 points on 8-for-9 shooting with seven rebounds.
- Tony DeWitte put up 15 points, connecting on four shots from long range, to go along with three rebounds and three assists while Thad Shymanski had 11 points.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot just 35.9 percent (23-of-64) from the field with six makes from long range. The Wasps were 21-for-27 (77.8%) at the free throw line.
- Calvin made 37-of-67 (55.2%) of its attempts and connected on 11 three-pointers. The Knights were hot at the stripe, converting 85.7% (12-of-14) of their free throw chances.
- Calvin led, 42-34, on the boards but E&H took advantage of 10 offensive rebounds to hold a 9-7 advantage on second-chance points.
- The Knights put up a 48-28 margin on points in the paint and outscored the Wasps, 31-7, on fast-break points.

- Emory & Henry will conclude play in the St. Pete Classic on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m., when it faces Skidmore College.
