Emory & Henry Men’s Basketball Holds Off Southern Virginia, 82-77, Wednesday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Basketball Team (6-2) saw five of its players reach double figures in scoring as it turned away a second-half rally by Southern Virginia University (4-5) for a 82-77 victory Wednesday afternoon.

How It Happened
- The two squads battled out to a 5-5 tie for the 16:26 mark of the first half before Emory & Henry scored 12 in a row to lead, 17-5, with 13:56 on the clock. SVU closed the gap to five, but the Wasps bounced back to extend the lead to margin to 13 (33-20). E&H carried a 41-30 advantage into the break.
- Returning to action, seven in a row by the Knights closed the deficit to four (41-37) before Emory & Henry got things back to double digits with a 13-7 run. The Wasps held a 68-55 advantage with 6:05 to go but SVU stormed back with an 18-6 run to get within one (74-73) with 1:16 remaining. E&H made its final two field goals and went 4-for-4 at the line to come away with the 82-77 win.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Freshman forward Cade Looney (Grundy, Va.) scored 16 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals while freshman forward Gabe Brown (Clintwood, Va.) notched 14 points, six rebounds and two steals.
- Freshman guard Jalen Leftwich (Lynchburg, Va.) had 14 points, four assists and three rebounds as junior guard Malcolm Morgan (Concord, N.C.) recorded 13 points, four assists, two steals, two blocks and two rebounds.
- Junior guard Kevin Grau Rodriguez (Tampa, Fla.) put up 12 points and three rebounds off the bench.

Southern Virginia Individual Leaders
- Conner Marchant dropped 32 points on 12-for-19 shooting to go along with three assists and two rebounds.
- Malakai Olson went for 18 points, six rebounds, two steals and two blocks while Elliott Spencer put up 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 32-for-62 (51.6%) for the game with five three-point baskets. The Wasps made 72.2 percent (13-of-18) of their free throws.
- Southern Virginia made 46.9 percent (30-of-64) on the afternoon with nine makes from long range. The Knights went 8-for-10 (80%) at the stripe.
- The two squads were even, 32-32, on the boards but E&H took full advantage of its nine offensive rebounds, scoring 14 second-chance points.
- E&H also held a 50-42 lead on points in the paint and a 25-20 margin on points off turnovers.
