UVA Wise Men’s Basketball Escapes Emory & Henry, 103-95, In Overtime Saturday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The University of Virginia's College at Wise Men's Basketball Team (1-9) outscored Emory & Henry College (6-3) 14-6 in overtime to come away with a 103-95 win Saturday afternoon in a matchup between future South Atlantic Conference opponents. The contest featured 12 ties and 17 lead changes as both squads shot better than 52 percent for the afternoon.

It was the first meeting between the Wasps and the Cavaliers since December 12, 2009. On that day, UVA Wise earned an 89-74 win at home.

How It Happened
- The teams went back and forth early in the first half with ties at 6-6, 8-8, 18-18, 20-20 and 32-32. Wise used a 7-1 run late in the period to go ahead 39-33, but E&H stormed back to tie things up again at 41-all. A pair of free throws with nine seconds to go before the intermission gave the Cavaliers a 43-41 advantage at the break.
- Returning to action in the second half, Emory & Henry opened on a 13-4 run which covered four minutes for a 54-47 advantage. Eight in a row by the Cavaliers briefly gave them a one-point lead as the two squads resumed their back-and-forth scoring for the remainder of regulation. E&H led, 88-83, with 2:31 to go but Wise made the best of their chances down the stretch to knot the game at 89 and force overtime.
- In the extra period, the Cavaliers started off with an 11-3 run to go ahead 100-92, building a margin large enough to hold off the Wasps. Emory & Henry went cold from the field in the final five minutes of the game, hitting just 1-of-6 field goals as UVA Wise was 4-for-6 with a pair of three-pointers.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Junior guard Malcolm Morgan (Concord, N.C.) had 20 points to go along with four rebounds, three assists and two steals while senior guard Micah Banks (Simpsonville, S.C.) added 20 points of his own with three rebounds.
- Freshman forward Gabe Brown (Clintwood, Va.) went for 18 points, six rebounds and seven blocks while freshman forward Cade Looney (Grundy, Va.) notched 15 points, four steals and three boards.

UVA Wise Individual Leaders
- Makai Vassell posted a game-high 26 points and nine rebounds with four assists while Grayson Honaker scored 23 points off the bench.
- Joel Pettiford went for 13 points and eight rebounds as Bradley Dean totaled 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry hit 36 of its 68 field goal attempts (52.9%) with six makes from beyond the arc. The Wasps were 17-for-22 (77.3%) at the free throw line.
- UVA Wise connected on 52.1 percent (37-for-71) of its shots with seven triples. The Cavaliers converted 22-of-26 (84.6%) of their chances at the stripe.
- Wise held a 36-31 rebounding advantage, but E&H was more efficient with its 11 offensive boards, leading 15-8 on second-chance points.
- The Cavaliers edged the Wasps, 56-54, on points in the paint.

- Emory & Henry will play its first game away from home this season on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. when it takes on D'Youville College at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, home of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets. The Saints are also a provisional member of NCAA Division II.
