Salem Men’s Basketball Escapes Emory & Henry, 80-77, In Overtime Thriller Thursday

EMORY, Va. – The Salem (W.Va.) University Men's Basketball Team (14-5) needed an extra five minutes, but was able to squeak out an 80-77 overtime victory over Emory & Henry College (14-5) Thursday evening in a matchup of NCAA Division II independents. The Wasps saw their seven-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the Tigers.

How It Happened
- Salem jumped out to a 7-2 lead at the 16:34 mark of the opening half but E&H went on a 16-5 run over the next four and a half minutes to take a 18-12 advantage. After trading scoring spurts for much of the period, the Tigers put together a 9-2 run to lead 38-32 with 53 seconds left before the break and would carry a 38-35 margin into the locker room.
- Returning to action, the squads battled for the opening eight minutes to a 51-all tie. Eight in a row by the Wasps started a 15-4 run that gave them a 66-55 lead with 7:10 left in regulation. Trailing by 10, SU scored 12 in a row to take a 70-68 lead with 1:46 on the clock. A final bucket in regulation by the Wasps made it 70-all as neither team scored in the final 87 seconds, forcing overtime.
- In the extra period, Emory & Henry went ahead twice in the opening minute but Salem took the lead for good, 77-75, with 3:14 left to play. The Wasps would get within one, and found themselves with a chance to force a second overtime, but the attempt caromed off the rim and the Tigers came away with the 80-77 win.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Freshman forward Cade Looney (Grundy, Va.) put up a team-high 20 points and completed the double-double as he added 20 points, four assists and three blocks.
- Freshman forward Gabe Brown (Clintwood, Va.) went for 16 points, four rebounds and two steals as junior guard Malcolm Morgan (Concord, N.C.) had 11 points and three assists.
- Sophomore guard Patrick Antonelli (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) tallied 10 points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals while junior guard Kevin Grau Rodriguez (Tampa, Fla.) tacked on 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

Salem (W.Va.) Individual Leaders
- Tobias Howard, Jr. led all players with 23 points to go along with four rebounds and three steals while Darius Bell went for 15 points, nine rebounds and two blocks.
- Fonz Hale pitched in 15 points, four rebounds and two assists.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry hit 38.0 percent (27-for-71) of its shots with 10 three-pointers. The Wasps went 13-for-17 (76.5%) at the free throw line.
- Salem shot 33-for-71 (46.5%) from the floor with six makes from long range. The Tigers struggled at the line, going just 8-for-21 (38.1%).
- SU held a 46-44 rebounding advantage and a 14-12 edge on second-chance points. The Tigers led 50-30 on points in the paint.
- E&H posted a 19-15 margin on points off turnovers as both squads committed 14 miscues during the game.
