Salem Men’s Basketball Handles Emory & Henry, 100-87, Saturday Afternoon

SALEM, W.Va. – The Salem (W.Va.) University Men's Basketball Team (17-6) opened up a 15-point halftime lead on its way to a 100-87 win over visiting Emory & Henry College (14-8) Saturday in a matchup of NCAA Division II independents.

How It Happened
- The two teams jostled for position early in the contest with Emory & Henry leading, 9-7, with 15:58 on the clock. A 15-2 run by the Tigers made it a 23-11 contest two and a half minutes later. The Wasps closed the gap to six (40-34) with a 11-3 run later in the half with Salem putting a 13-2 run to finish the half for the 53-38 margin.
- The squads went back-and-forth early in the second with three-point baskets. Trailing by 16 points with 12:55 to play, E&H went on a 14-5 run to get the deficit down to seven (78-71) but Salem pushed back to go back ahead by 16 five minutes later. The Wasps would cut into the margin again down the stretch but it was too much to overcome as the Tigers claimed the 100-87 win.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Freshman forward Cade Looney (Grundy, Va.) led all players with 35 points going 11-for-14 from the field and 10-for-10 from the free throw line. He also pulled down seven rebounds on the afternoon.
- Freshman forward Gabe Brown (Clintwood, Va.) had 17 points, six rebounds and three steals while junior guard Malcolm Morgan (Concord, N.C.) went for 11 points and six assists.
- Junior guard Kevin Grau Rodriguez (Tampa, Fla.) posted 11 points, two rebounds and two steals off the bench.

Salem (W.Va.) Individual Leaders
- Rodney Smith paced the Tigers with 31 points, five rebounds and four assists while Tobias Howard, Jr. registered 27 points, seven assists, five rebounds and two steals.
- Stan Smith tacked on 20 points, eight boards and two assists with Barron Tanner notching 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry made 28-of-67 (41.8%) of its shots with nine three-pointers and hit 84.6 percent (22-of-26) of its free throws.
- Salem shot 56.5 percent (35-for-62) for the contest with 17 triples. The Tigers were a nearly-perfect 13-for-14 (92.9%) at the charity stripe.
- Salem held a 40-30 rebounding advantage and outscored E&H by a 30-26 margin on points in the paint.
- The Wasps managed a 18-7 lead on points off turnovers and second-chance points.
