Emory & Henry Men’s Basketball Falls To East Tennessee State, 88-66, In Exhibition Monday

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Basketball Team took on East Tennessee State University in its second and final NCAA Division I exhibition game of the year Monday evening. The Buccaneers won the contest, 88-66, in what was their first official game of the 2022-23 season.

How It Happened
- The game began as a back-and-forth contest, with the Bucs holding a narrow 10-8 lead at the first media timeout. The Wasps continued to battle, drawing within one at 15-14 before an eight-point ETSU run increased the gap to 23-14, forcing an E&H timeout. The Wasps responded to close the gap, but the Bucs would rally to run the score to 34-26 at the under four minute break. ETSU would end the frame on an 11-5 run to take a 45-31 lead into the halftime break.
- The Bucs extended their lead early in the second stanza as they pushed their advantage to 61-38 at the 12 minute mark. ETSU would maintain their lead through the middle stages of the second half and the score stood at 72-48. E&H answered back and cut the deficit to as few as 17, but the Bucs held on for the 88-66 victory. 

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Senior guard Malcolm Morgan (Concord, N.C.) paced the Wasps with 14 points, four rebounds and a block. Sophomore guard Jalen Leftwich (Lynchburg, Va.) contributed 12 points, three rebounds, three steals and an assist.
- Sophomore forward Cade Looney (Grundy, Va.) had ten points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal while sophomore guard/forward Gabe Brown (Clintwood, Va.) added six points, three rebounds and two assists.

East Tennessee State Individual Leaders
- Justice Smith led the effort for ETSU with 20 points, six rebounds and an assist while Brock Jancek added 14 points, seven rebounds and an assist of his own.
- Deanthony Tipler posted 11 points, two assists and two steals in addition to Jaden Seymour's ten points, game-high nine rebounds and an assist.

A Deeper Look
- ETSU shot 45.5 percent (35-for-77) from the field while Emory & Henry made 24-of-50 (48%) of their shots. The Buccaneers hit nine three-pointers in the contest, compared to five for the Wasps.
- The Bucs held a 44-34 rebounding advantage and a 48-38 lead on points in the paint.
- East Tennessee State won the forced turnover battle by a 23-13 margin, and converted those giveaways into 35 points compared to just nine for E&H.

- Emory & Henry will get the 2022-23 regular season underway Saturday when it plays host to Bluefield State University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., and will be the first game of a doubleheader with the E&H women's team.
