Emory & Henry Men’s Basketball Drops Heartbreaker to Malone, 68-66, Thursday Evening

EMORY, Va. – The Malone University Men's Basketball Team (3-0, 0-0 GMAC) defeated Emory & Henry College (1-1, 0-0 SAC) in a non-conference heartbreaker on Thursday evening. The Pioneers took the win by a 68-66 scoreline.

How It Happened
- The opening minutes of the first half began as an evenly-contested affair with both teams trading buckets. The Wasps held a narrow 13-11 lead at the first media timeout. The Pioneers responded through the middle of the stanza, running out to a 38-20 lead with four minutes to play. E&H ended the half on a 12-0 run to trim the deficit to just six points heading into halftime.
- Malone would extend their lead to double-digits at 46-36 but the Wasps once again battled back to pull within two points halfway through the second frame. The two squads continued to alternate scores and the tally stood tied at 63-63 with 2:31 to play. A big three-point jump shot from Patrick Antonelli (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) gave the Wasps the lead, but back-to-back layups allowed the Pioneers to retake the lead and they would hold on for the 68-66 win.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Senior guard Kevin Grau Rodriguez (Tampa, Fla.) led the Wasps with ten points, two rebounds and three assists off the bench. Antonelli tallied nine points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals.
- Sophomore guard/forward Gabe Brown (Clintwood, Va.) contributed nine points, five rebounds and an assist while senior guard Malcolm Morgan (Concord, N.C.) added eight points, four rebounds, four assists, a block and a steal.

Malone Individual Leaders
- Justin Miller led the Pioneers with 20 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Bo Myers had 15 points, seven rebounds and a steal.
- Caleb Conard added nine points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal off the bench for Malone.

A Deeper Look
- Malone shot 42.6 percent (26-for-61) from the field while Emory & Henry made 25-of-60 (41.7%) of their shots. The Wasps team hit nine three-pointers in the contest, compared to six for the Pioneers.
- The Pioneers held a 39-29 rebounding advantage and a 40-30 lead on points in the paint.
