Carson-Newman Men’s Basketball Holds Off Emory & Henry, 85-69, Saturday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Carson-Newman University Men's Basketball Team (9-2, 4-0 SAC) defeated Emory & Henry College (7-4, 1-3 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles took the win by a 85-69 score.

How It Happened
- The Eagles jumped out front early on and held a 17-10 lead at the under 12 minute media timeout. The visitors from Jefferson City continued to push the tempo and extended their lead to 28-15 with five minutes remaining in the opening half. Carson-Newman was able to maintain their advantage throughout the rest of the first half and took the 38-26 lead into the halftime break.
- The visitors came out of the break firing on all cylinders, as they were able to push their lead to 30 (67-37) with 9:28 to play. The Wasps would make a run in the latter stages of the second stanza. E&H outscored the Eagles 28-7 over a six-minute span, including four made three-pointers from senior guard Kevin Grau Rodriguez (Tampa, Fl.) to trim the deficit to just nine at the 3:07 mark. Carson-Newman was able to settle down and hit free throws down the stretch to take the 85-69 win.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Senior guard Malcolm Morgan (Concord, N.C.) had 15 points, seven rebounds and two assists while Rodriguez added 15 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.
- Sophomore forward Jake Moynihan (Muncie, Ind.) had seven points and four rebounds while sophomore guard Jacob Morgan (Huntersville, N.C.) contributed seven points, two rebounds and a block for the Wasps.

Carson-Newman Individual Leaders
- Bryant Thomas led Carson-Newman with 18 points, five rebounds, four blocks and a steal while teammate Luke Brenegan added 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
- Caleb Bridgewater had 14 points, four rebounds and a steal for the Eagles in the winning effort.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 35.9 percent (23-for-64) from the field while Carson-Newman made 26-of-59 (44.1%) of their shots. The Wasps and Eagles hit 11 three-point baskets each in the contest.
- C-N held a narrow 40-39 rebounding advantage and outscored the Wasps by a 26-18 margin in points in the paint.

- Emory & Henry will step out of conference play on Monday as it makes the trip to Takoma Park, Maryland to take on Washington Adventist University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
