Emory & Henry Men’s Basketball Tops Mars Hill, 72-65, Wednesday On The Road

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Basketball Team (11-8, 3-7 SAC) defeated Mars Hill University (5-13, 1-8 SAC) in midweek South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday evening. The Wasps dispatched the Lions by a 72-65 score.

How It Happened
- The Wasps started the game on the front foot, as they jumped out to the early 10-5 lead after five minutes played. The Lions battled back to draw within two but a three-point bucket from sophomore Jacob Morgan (Huntersville, N.C.) pushed the advantage back out to 17-12 at the 11:06 mark. Mars Hill was able to level the game at 21-21 before back-to-back threes from sophomore Gabe Brown (Clintwood, Va.) and another bucket from long distance off the hand of freshman Christian Drummer (Lawrenceville, Ga.) pushed the E&H advantage to 30-23. The two squads traded buckets and the margin stood at 33-26 in favor of the visitors at the halftime break.
- The beginning of the second stanza saw both teams pushing the pace and the Wasps were able to capitalize, scoring 15 points in the first six minutes to increase their lead to 51-38. The Lions once again battled back to close the deficit to just four at 53-49 with 10:46 to play. A quick 8-3 run for E&H saw the lead swell back out to 61-52 at the under eight minute media break. Mars Hill responded with a 10-1 run of their own to even the score at 62-62 with three minutes remaining. Three made free throws from Brown followed by five consecutive points from Drummer gave the Wasps an eight point cushion and they held on for a 72-65 victory. 

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Brown led the E&H attack with a game-high 26 points, five rebounds and a steal while classmate Jake Moynihan (Muncie, Ind.) added 14 points, three boards and an assist.
- Sophomore guard Jalen Leftwich (Lynchburg, Va.) had eight points, five assists, four boards and two steals. Drummer posted ten points, two rebounds and an assist in the win.

Mars Hill Individual Leaders
- Kory Davis led the Lions with 24 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal while Trey Belin contributed ten points, and two rebounds.
- Isaiah Jones had eight points, nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 40 percent (24-for-60) from the field while Mars Hill made 24-of-54 (44.4%) of their shots. The Wasps knocked down seven shots from the three-point arc, compared to just four for the Lions.
- The Wasps shot well from the charity stripe, making 17-of-19 (89.5%) attempts. The Lions shot 72.2% (13-for-18) from the free-throw line.
- E&H forced 18 turnovers and converted those miscues into 27 points. Mars Hill forced 14 turnovers but was only able to manufacture ten points off those mistakes.
