Emory & Henry Men's Basketball Defeats Mars Hill, 80-72, To Earn First SAC Win Of The Season

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Basketball Team (4-7, 1-3 SAC) earned its first South Atlantic Conference win of the season over Mars Hill University (1-9, 0-3 SAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Wasps had four different players score in double digits on their way to the 80-72 victory.

How It Happened
- The Wasps were quick out of the gate as they took an early 7-2 advantage, but the Lions responded with a 12-2 run to hold the 14-9 lead with 14:05 to play in the opening stanza. The remainder of the first was a back-and-forth affair that saw the lead change hands three times and was tied on five separate occasions. Back-to-back buckets from junior guard Kevin Taylor (Acworth, Ga.) and sophomore forward Marshall Klug (Greensboro, N.C.) put the Wasps up to the 34-point mark where they would hold on to the 34-31 lead at the break.
- E&H would step on the gas pedal in the opening stages of the second half as they ballooned their lead out to its largest of the game at 60-46 on a layup from junior forward Jake Moynihan (Muncie, Ind.). The Lions drew within seven with 3:46 remaining, but Klug immediately answered with a three-point jumper to restore the Wasp lead to double digits. E&H would hold on to the lead for the entirety of the second frame and earned the 80-72 win. 

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Moynihan paced the Wasps with a double-double of 19 points, ten rebounds and an assist as he reached double digits in scoring for the eighth time this season. Junior forward Cade Looney (Grundy, Va.) added 11 points and four rebounds while Klug finished with 11 points, three boards and two assists off of the bench.
- Junior guard Jalen Leftwich (Lynchburg, Va.) had 11 points, four rebounds, four helpers and a steal. Taylor contributed nine points, four rebounds, a pair of assists and two steals in the win. 

Mars Hill Individual Leaders
- Kadyn Dawkins led the Lions with a game-high 21 points, four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals while Kory Davis had 20 points, four assists, a trio of steals and a rebound.
- London Maiden posted a double-double with 12 points, a game-high 12 rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot well as it made 54.5% (30-for-55) of its shots from the field while Mars Hill knocked down just 21-of-61 (34.4%) of their shots. The Wasps made ten shots (45.5%) from the three-point arc, compared to just eight for the Lions (29.6%).
- The Wasps outrebounded the Lions by a 40-29 margin and  held a massive 40-24 advantage on points in the paint.
- Mars Hill capitalized on its trips to the charity stripe, converting 91.7% (22-for-24) while E&H struggled to go just 10-for-16 (62.5%).
- The Wasps' bench came up big, outscoring the Lions 26-12.
- MHU won the turnover battle, forcing 20 Wasp miscues while committing just 14 of their own. The Lions however only held a small 23-21 scoring advantage on the possessions following those miscues.

- Emory & Henry returns home on Tuesday, December 19 for its final game before the Winter Break as the Wasps play host to the Flying Fleet of Erskine College for a non-conference showdown. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. from the John Rutledge King Center.
