Newberry Men’s Basketball Defeats Emory & Henry, 95-84, In SAC Play Saturday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Newberry College Men's Basketball Team (5-11, 4-7 SAC) had five different players score in double digits Saturday afternoon as they handed Emory & Henry College (4-15, 1-10 SAC) a 95-84 South Atlantic Conference loss inside the John Rutledge King Center.

How It Happened
- The first half was high scoring to start the game and the two squads lit it up from the field, resulting in a narrow 16-15 E&H advantage at the first media timeout. Newberry answered with a 10-2 run out of the break to jump ahead 25-18 with just over ten minutes to play in the opening stanza. The Wasps managed to trim the deficit through the next four minutes to make it a 33-31 lead for the visitors, but another quick spurt from the visitors pushed their advantage back out to ten at 50-40. Junior guard Gabe Brown (Clintwood, Va.) buried a three-point jumper at the buzzer to make it a seven-point game at the half.
- Both teams held serve to begin the second frame as the score stood at 61-53 with 15:32 to play. The Wolves pushed the lead out to 12, but once again the Wasps clawed back to draw within just a point at the 9:27 mark. A 22-8 run over the following six and a half minutes gave Newberry its biggest lead of the game at 93-78. The Wolves never looked back and earned the victory by a 95-84 final score.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Sophomore forward Jacob Dar (Omaha, Neb.) posted his fourth consecutive game with 15 or more points as he recorded 20 points, eight rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocked shots. Brown had 20 points, seven rebounds and a blocked shot.
- Junior forward Cade Looney (Grundy, Va.) contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and an assist off of the bench while junior guard Jalen Leftwich (Lynchburg, Va.) finished with ten points, eight assists, five rebounds and a steal.

Newberry Individual Leaders
- Devario Sheppard led Newberry with a game-high 24 points, four rebounds and four assists while Malik Joseph added 22 points, six rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot.
- James Lovorn played all 40 minutes and posted 14 points, six assists, three rebounds and a steal. Drake Downs and Booker Cusaac each finished with ten points.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 44.3 percent (31-for-70) for the game with 11 made three-pointers (33.3%). The Wasps went 11-for-14 (78.6%) at the free throw line.
- Newberry converted 36-of-71 (50.7%) of its field goal attempts, connecting on 13 triples for 54.2% from behind the three-point stripe. The Eagles knocked down 71.4 percent (10-of-14) of their free throws.
- The Wolves made a concerted effort to score in the painted area, posting a 40-26 advantage. They also assisted on 22 made baskets compared to 15 for the Wasps.
- Both teams took care of the basketball with E&H committing eight turnovers to just three for Newberry.

- Emory & Henry hits the road again Wednesday, January 31 when the Wasps make the quick trip to face off against Southwest Virginia rivals the University of Virginia's College at Wise. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. as the second half of a double dip with the women's squad.
