Emory & Henry Men’s Golf Ties For Fifth Place At Glade Springs Fall Kickoff Wednesday

DANIELS, W.Va. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Golf Team got the 2023-24 campaign underway on Tuesday and Wednesday with a fifth-place finish at the Glade Springs Fall Kickoff. The three-round, 54-hole tournament was co-hosted by University of Charleston (W.Va.) and Davis & Elkins College and played at The Resort at Glade Springs' Cobb Course.

Additionally, the Wasps saw sophomore Jordan Kuang Kyaw (Yangon, MYANMAR) card the low round of the tournament with a -7 (65) on Wednesday which was also a school record for 18 holes on his way to a top-five finish.

Round One
Kuang Kyaw opened the tournament, shooting a 73 (+1) on Tuesday morning to tie for 15th while sophomore Slade Aliff (Hardy, Va.) was tied for 23rd at +3 (75). Freshman Sam Fansler (Moneta, Va.) posted a 78 (+6) in his collegiate debut, tying for 36th.

Senior Avery Alexander (Christiansburg, Va.) shot a +8 (80) while junior Jhon Ojeda (Cali, COLOMBIA) carded an 81 (+9).

Round Two
On Tuesday afternoon, Ojeda bounced back with a T-5th best round of even par (72) while and Aliff notched a 77 (+5) and Alexander shot a +6 (78). Kuang Kyaw posted a 79 (+7) while Fansler went for an 86 (+14).

As a team, Emory & Henry found itself sitting in seventh place out of the 13-team field after 36 holes of competition at +36 (306-306 – 612).

Round Three
Kuang Kyaw came out firing on all cylinders on Wednesday morning, topping the field with his record-breaking round of -7 (65) to finish in a tie for fifth place at +1. His raw score of 217 was also a school record for a 54-hole event.

Aliff tied for 21st overall, shooting a 75 (+3) on the day to end the tournament at +11 while Ojeda's third round of 83 (+11) placed him tied for 43rd with a score of +20.

Alexander posted a 79 (+7), which was good for a tournament of +21 and a T-45th individual placing as Fansler shaved 10 strokes off his second round for a +4 (76) to end the event at +24 (T-53rd).

The Winners
Glenville State College edged Indiana University of Pennsylvania for the team title at +15, shooting an 879 (289-296-294). IUP's +16 came by way of rounds of 290, 291, and 299. E&H tied for fifth with Davis & Elkins at +43 (907), setting a program record for a 54-hole team score by seven shots.

Alex Swinnerton of Indiana (Pa.) torched the field with a pair of rounds in the 60's, finishing at -5 (211), five strokes ahead of a three-way tie for second place. Shaydon Johnson (Glenville State), Carson Proffitt (Concord University) and Erik Ulvang (Charleston (W.Va.) shared runner-up accolades.

Emory & Henry will return to Golf Club of Bristol in Bristol, Tennessee for the King University Invitational on Monday, September 25 and Tuesday, September 26.
