EMORY, Va. - The Eastern Mennonite University Men's Soccer Team (8-8-1, 5-4 ODAC) scored a goal early in the 89th minute to break a 1-1 tie to slip past Emory & Henry College (2-12-3, 0-6-3 ODAC) Wednesday evening at Fred Selfe Stadium.
E&H opened the scoring at the 7:30 mark when the EMU goalkeeper was called for a foul in the box. The first penalty kick was saved, but re-given because the keeper was said to have come off his line. On his second attempt, freshman defender Tory Schneider (Williamsburg, Va.) was able to convert for the score.
The Royals equalized the match 15 minutes later (22:18) as Joao Downs completed a nice play, tying the match at a goal apiece. The 1-1 tie would carry through to the intermission.
After the break, both teams had chances to break open the scoring, but the defense and goalkeepers for each squad held strong. With less than two minutes remaining in the contest, Eastern Mennonite found a seam in the Emory & Henry back line and Jacob Shank took advantage, dribbling through and placing the ball in the left side of the net.
EMU outshot E&H by a 16-7 margin, but the Wasps had several chances down the stretch that were turned away. The Royals also held a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Justin Spencer (Statesville, N.C.) made nine saves in the contest for Emory & Henry while Andrew Yoder picked up the win in goal for Eastern Mennonite.
E&H will remain at home on Saturday evening when Hampden-Sydney College visits Fred Selfe Stadium at 7:30 p.m. The contest will serve as Senior Night for the Wasps and will be a part of the College's annual Homecoming festivities.
