Maryville Men’s Soccer Downs Emory & Henry, 5-1, Saturday Afternoon

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Maryville (Tenn.) College Men's Soccer Team improved to 2-0 on the season as it picked up a 5-1 victory over Emory & Henry College (0-3) Saturday afternoon at the MC Soccer Field.

The Scots got things going just 8:41 into the match as David Lethco found Alex Waddell for the score. Maryville would make it 2-0 at halftime thanks to a goal by Connor McCarty in the 37th minute. Patrick Braxton was credited with the assist.

Three minutes before the hour mark, Emory & Henry got on the board. After earning a penalty kick, the Wasps looked to sophomore defender Tory Schneider (Williamsburg, Va.), who converted for his first goal of the season.

The score would remain 2-1 for 12 more minutes until Lethco got on the receiving end of a pass from Brent Seltzer that he placed in the back of the net. Three minutes later, Payne Fisher broke down the Wasps' back line and got the unassisted goal.

The final tally of the afternoon came at the 79:33 mark as Seltzer took a pass from Braxton and beat the goalkeeper.

For the match, Maryville outshot Emory & Henry by a 24-5 margin and held a 10-1 advantage on corner kicks. The Wasps, however, were able to force the Scots offside on nine different occasions.

Emory & Henry freshman goalkeeper Joe Kedanis (Carmel, Ind.) had a career-high 14 saves despite the loss while Maryille's Ben Munger made two saves, picking up the win.

In addition to Schneider, senior Zach James (Stephens City, Va.), junior Kenny Sterne (Lynchburg, Va.) and freshman Ian Smith (Waynesville, N.C.) each had shots on goal from their position in the midfield.

Emory & Henry will remain on the road tomorrow when it faces Huntingdon College on the Maryville campus. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
