Emory & Henry Men’s Soccer Defeats Shenandoah, 2-1, For First ODAC Win

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Soccer Team (2-12, 1-5 ODAC) picked up its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference of the year Saturday afternoon as it defeated Shenandoah University (0-13, 0-6 ODAC) by a 2-1 score at Fred Selfe Stadium.

The Wasps got on the board in the 30th minute as senior forward Luis Peralta (Robbins, N.C.) slotted a pass to senior midfielder Zach James (Stephens City, Va.) that he one-timed past the goalkeeper.

Shenandoah equalized with just eight seconds remaining before the intermission. After a Wasp foul gave the Hornets a free kick from 22 yards out on the left side, Alex Clouse fired a shot into the far upper 90 to make the score 1-1 at the half.

After the break, the two squads battled back and forth with each having several opportunities to take the lead. With 19:10 left on the clock, junior midfielder Kenny Sterne (Lynchburg, Va.) played a long vertical pass to sophomore forward Pierce Moreland (Bristol, Tenn.). Moreland only had to beat the last defender and slot the ball to the keeper's left side for the go-ahead goal.

Shenandoah nearly tied the contest at two goals apiece late but excellent goalkeeping by Emory & Henry freshman Didier Grillett (Matthews, N.C.) kept the advantage for the home side. Grillett finished the match with eight saves as he picked up the win.

E&H held a 18-16 advantage on shots in the match but SU led in shots on goal, 9-7. The Hornets also had nine corner kicks to the Wasps five but were also called offside on four different occasions. Shenandoah goalkeeper Rodrigo Casteriana had four saves in the match despite the loss.

Emory & Henry will be on the road on Tuesday when it travels to face Randolph College in an ODAC contest. Kickoff between the Wasps and WildCats is set for 7:00 p.m.
